Guerrilla Resolutions:

Ten ways to revolutionise your New Year goals (by doing nothing)!

I came across a quote while frantically fitting in a quick skim of a well known social media site the other day;

So many feel lethargic, unmotivated or worn out in this hemisphere.

We are really not made to rocket straight through winter, ablaze with energy.

Look at nature.

The ground and plants and animals are deep at rest.

This is the natural way of things.

Spend some time with the long nights, the moon, solitude, the bare earth, stillness.

Be easier on yourself.”

Exactly!

We plummet past Christmas and New Year celebrations, slap bang into what is perceived as a fresh start of opportune renewal and motivated positive change. We pressure ourselves to force up near spent energies and masquerade them as boundless, when really what we need is a human form of hibernation- to recuperate, nourish and revitalise our inner and outer selves, before committing to a list of goals with Military precision..

Like the rest of nature we need to rest and reenergise, so that we can reemerge ready to revolutionise our lives.

You see your fellow man charging forth with great gusto, ready to do battle on their own revolutionary path; But how often do you see them fall (quite literally sometimes if they’ve recently taken up jogging)..?

So let’s start a rebellion, by changing tac, by going underground and under duvet!

There is a time to wage war on this New Year but now is not that time.

Now is the time to replenish, plan, strategise, gather the troops and build a resistance with resilience.

Now is the time for a peaceful protest of reflection and relaxation.

1. Whether this is a solitary act of rebellion, or you have troops to muster, first and foremost erect that pillow fort and batten down the hatches.

2. Your first goal should be to take care of yourself. You are no good to anyone worn out from the previous year’s battles.

Nourish with good nutrition: a balanced, healthy diet of proteins, fruit and vegetables, carbs, good fats etc, and the occasional treat of whatever you fancy (mine is a glass of red!) is necessary for prime performance in all your New Year endeavours.

Hydrate yourself! I drink water and juice throughout my day with a chamomile tea before bed, and a caffeine cut off before midday.

Deal with your ailments so that you'll be fit for the fight ahead. If you have a constant niggle from your body you can’t focus fully on other tasks at hand.

Perfect your sleep routine: Make sure that that body of yours is warm and relaxed to encourage a good night’s sleep.

Write down or vent anything that is worrying you before you close your eyes or preferably before your sleep routine begins.

Relax your muscles from head to toe. Clench and unclench each area. Clear your mind. Don't think. Imagine yourself somewhere serene.

A good sleep can change the state of play completely, so invest your time into perfecting this ancient art.

3. Keep your body fit by finding activities that you love (it doesn’t have to be Boot Camp)! Motivate and revitalise your energies at your pace, which will in turn help you to relax (and encourage a deeper sleep!) and focus.

For me it's hiking, wild swimming and yoga that make me feel good, but if you're not ready for anything quite so energetic, wait until you are: If now is not the time, snuggle. But still try to mentally prepare and excite yourself with the prospect of activity to come.

4. Spend time in nature, or stay under your duvet, and focus on finding the things that bring you joy in life; Make it your goal to intertwine them with the rest of the year’s more mundane tasks, helping you to troop through it with a resilient bounce in your step;

For example, this year in between chores and paperwork, I hope to go running with my husky, wild swim in the local river and walk barefoot outside. I might stargaze in between the chaos or go for a forage, or just jump around with my children on our trampoline.

The Most important thing to remember however, is that no Sergeant Major is going to have you court marshalled if you don’t do these things: be easy on your already frantic self!

5. Use your duvet time to doodle and scrawl, brainstorm and plan. Create your strategies and tactics for navigating the year ahead by creating lists if it helps: to-do lists, declutter lists, a list of short term goals and a list of goals for the long term.

Use whatever method you prefer to make sense of your world and untangle your thoughts.

6. Create a Bucket list to go wild with: No matter how impossible you think this list is to achieve use your imagination to write it, immersing yourself in a world of your making.

For instance, I dream of being a Marine Biologist in Antarctica or Climbing Everest, or being part of a crew of a Scavenger Ship in Space;

I use these ideas to improve my days; when trooping through the bogs of normality, luxuriating in occasional escapism can help to refocus and energise me, by inspiring and enriching. I use Pinterest or YouTube, watch a documentary or find a film to take me where I want to go, when reality doesn’t allow it.

7. Use your lists and notes to create goals, but approach tactically, at a gentle pace - Test the waters ahead, and build up momentum when your energies allow;

Whether it’s relationships, bad habits, your career, finances, or anything that doesn't have a positive effect on your overall wellbeing, strategize a gentle, realistic transition from what you have at present to what you hope to attain in the future.

8. If you're able to, recruit and rally your troops, delegate and share tasks. If you don't have to do this alone, don’t. Find allied forces to help take on the tasks at hand. Find strength in numbers.

9. Don't be hard on yourself if you go off the beaten track or AWOL for whatever reason.

Navigate, at a pace that suits you, onto a positive path again. Don’t be afraid to ask others for directions, but don’t forget your own instincts - you may find yourself on a different route to the one you initially planned, but to adventure is to have lived, and sometimes a wrong turn can lead to the best places.

10. No matter where you're stationed, no matter the terrain or atmospherics; Whether you're based in a blanket fort, being rocked in the hull of a boat or curled up by a campfire, I hope this can help you navigate a clear trajectory through whatever resolutions you set yourself this year, whenever you are ready. Until then, relax!
