Giving Life One More Try

Winning The Fight Against Depression

By isaac charlesPublished 3 years ago • 3 min read

Quick question.

Why are we always linking suicide to just depression?

What about heartbreak? Anyway at the risk of sounding insensitive, someone is probably thinking of dying. This is where being “woke” score points because everyone will be concerned about the suicidal and depression.

Ten years ago, no one would have given a flying *insert the homonym of a three pronged cutlery*. To anyone having suicidal thoughts, Life is beautiful. No need to hasten the Grim reaper. It comes of its own will via terminal diseases, drunk driving, a slip in the shower, terrorists, stray bullets, gamma ray burst or too much pizza. You name it.

Life is beautiful…(maybe, it is insensitive to say that) but coming from someone who has reached the end of his tether at one point. Then it should count for something. Now everyone is an amateur therapist (without the couch, box of tissues, fake waterfall and the sound system playing nature sounds). Before you fall apart in the DM of a total stranger, please remember that ours is an apathetic society. Ain’t no love in the heart of the city. We literally don’t give a guck about each other. Folks will eventually run out of empathy and face their own problems — real or imagined. And I am afraid you might relapse because you have been dependent on them for emotional support.

Let me tell you a story. A true life story. A certain dude loved a girl to bits. She is the only girl he has ever loved till date. Never realized he was only loving her for dear life. Using her as a distraction from the dark clouds of depression. See me sharing intimate details of another person’s life.

He was a wistful freeloader at the airport cargo hall. She was just getting into university. Forget how they met. He was 22 and she was 20 at the time. He gave her everything. She was his fantasy moll. She sent him poetry every morning. He sent her sonnets. He also decided her outfits on most days. She knew the lyrics to his favorite songs. They were in sync. It was love in lala land.

To quote Deadpool…”Love is a beautiful thing. When it finds you , the whole world smells like daffodil daydream” *Takes deep breath*

Long story short. She died by suicide. He relapsed. This was 2011. It was like a vampire sucked his blood and along with it, sucked every thing he cared about.

To quote Deadpool again..

“Here’s the thing. Life is an endless series of train-wrecks with only brief, commercial-like breaks of happiness.”

I am telling you this because how long will someone check on you? They will get tired of you and abandon you with your “wahala” or just die like the girl. Don’t meet your pastor either. They will just lay hand on you and mutter “It is well” . At the end of the day, pastor sef get him own challenge. I made the terrible mistake of going to the counselling class of my former church at the time just because I was desperate. I will spare you the details but I regretted that decision. So thank your stars, if you find someone who gives a quarter of a guck. I guess that is why people extol their spouses and talk about them like they are the best thing since granulated sugar on Instagram. Depression is usually an hot topic now until another Afropop artiste drops another viral street record or Burna Boy announces the release of his forthcoming album .Let’s discuss it when another high profile celebrity decides to throw in the towel.

Next!!!

Let me tell you another story. A young man decided to carry out a social experiment he had read from some cheesy novel in his university library. He decided to send a Whatsapp broadcast to all his contacts.

Message goes thus

“Friends, I have been suffering from depression for a while now. It is eating me alive and today I have decided that I have had enough. I am bidding each and every one of you farewell. Don’t cry at my funeral and don’t hesitate to tell the world what a great guy I was to each and every one of you. He hit “forward” Some minutes later, he received a message. He quickly tapped the screen to view the message.

It read thus.” Hey , dude. How are you doing? Please, you still owe me 5000. Can you pay up?

The young man wept bitterly.
