Getting Started With Exercising At Home

We've been avoiding it in current times, but it's time to make a change.

Staying fit has become more important than ever, especially with the pandemic crisis that we’re all in together. I recall when I used to go to the office every day I would look at my fitness tracker that I’d be doing 10,000~15,000 steps per day.

Fast forward to the pandemic and working from home, this quickly changed to about 3,000-5,000 steps per day, and I’d be lucky if I hit that number of 5,000. As you would imagine, the weight would quickly start to stack back on especially with the diet not being as good as you would want it to be.

It all kind of came at once, I didn’t notice this immediately but after a while and especially as a pair of wedding pants didn’t fit on I realised that I’ve become unfit.

The first thing I said to my wife was: We’ve gained some extra pounds and we need to start thinking of ways to lose weight, especially whilst we’re in lockdown. During our research, we’ve found and come up with some exercises to lose weight at home. Below is a list that can help you get started as well.

3 Ways To Start Exercising From Home

1. Look at some at-home fitness exercises on YouTube

What’s amazing about the internet in this current day and age is the amount of content that is available out there, especially from people that have been in the fitness industry for a long time - and they share that content for free.

Simply searching on YouTube for terms such as “exercises to lose weight at home” or “at home workouts” you could find 10-minute or 20-minute workouts that you can do in your living room. They usually come with great music too and it won’t take you long to find one that suits your fitness level.

2. Yoga

Yoga has been around for a very long time and is especially great if you haven’t been stretching much or focusing on mindfulness. If you’re doing it at home too you can just get started with a rubber mat or beach towel, but yoga mats aren’t that expensive anymore either and you can get started quite easily.

I’m by no means a master yoga instructor, but much like our first suggestion - if you simply look at some beginner yoga videos on YouTube you will quickly find ways to get started, and if you haven’t been meditating lately it will definitely help with some mindfulness building as well.

3. Treadmills

If steps is your game, and your major focus used to be running and/or walking then getting a treadmill would be a great investment. With lockdowns looming and gyms constantly closing and re-opening its worth it to have your own treadmill these days.

You don’t even need to pick up an expensive brand new one, if you check out your local classifieds you can usually find one that’s being sold second hand that won’t cost you an arm and a leg and is a great way to get started if you have space. Otherwise, something such as a recumbent bike is good too.

Final Words

You can get creative, I’ve done dips on chairs, pull-ups on my door frames and have run in a single position or just done jumping jacks. Get creative, but of course, make sure you’re being careful with any makeshift exercises!

We’re constantly getting creative and writing about things to do at home or even outside if you have that luxury. If you’re interested in finding out about more exercises and routines, check out our website - The Ultimate Primate.
