When I was younger, I thought it was usual to sleep in on weekends and holidays, and weekdays when you didn’t have anything important scheduled.

I never understood why people found it quite hard to wake up early in the morning. As I’ve grown older, I realize that it is difficult to wake up early as much as it is to sleep in on weekends and holidays.

I know what you’re thinking. There are few people who enjoy waking up early. They’d much rather sleep in and snooze their alarm over and over again.

But I used to be one of those people!

I was never much of an early riser, but now that I have to wake up before dawn to prepare for my day, I can see that waking up early has some major advantages.

Here are four reasons why I love waking up early.

I can be more productive

Wake up early can be more productive. It is not unusual to get more done in the morning than you could in an entire afternoon if you only have time for lunch and a quick power nap.

I love waking up early because I can get more done during my limited working hours than someone who works a standard 9-to-5 job.

I used to think that having more time in a day would give me more time to have fun and relax, but it turns out that when you wake up early, you will be able to get much more done than if you sleep in until 10 or 11.

That is because your brain is not functioning at its max potential until about 20 minutes after getting up.

If you are one of those people who does not feel like they have enough hours in a day, try getting up earlier.

By working smart, I can use my short time at work to its full advantage. It means that with proper planning and goal setting, everyone can be their boss while having plenty of free time left over to enjoy life outside of work.

My mind stays fresh and active

For many years, my alarm went off, and then I rolled over to hit snooze. Now that same alarm wakes me up immediately. It has been a game-changer for me.

My mind stays fresh and active even in the early morning because there are no distractions like getting ready or packing lunches to slow me down.

It’s nice to get an extra three hours of productivity before my day starts! On days when it feels impossible to jump out of bed in time for work, knowing that a hot cup of coffee awaits makes me feel alive.

Everyone should get eight hours of sleep every night. Even if you can’t fit it all in during your sleep period, catching some zzz’s is vital — a lack of sleep hurts us both mentally and physically. However, most people don’t prioritize sleeping enough.

Waking up early allows me to start my day refreshed. Many of us wake up exhausted because we’ve been dreaming, tossing and turning, and possibly seeing horrifying nightmares that have disrupted our sleep. However, if you get up early, your mind will be fresh and active as you prepare for the day.

You’re not groggy from disturbing dreams so you can focus and get important things done without distractions or delays.

When I need a pick-me-up in the late afternoon, I don’t reach for an energy drink; instead, I head outside for a quick stroll or catch some fresh air inside my home.

Getting ahead of the day makes me feel accomplished

It is not just that getting up in the morning gives me time to take care of tasks before the workday starts and helps me get ahead of the game instead of putting things off until later in the day.

After years of sleeping in, I’ve learned that just five extra hours of sleep is nothing compared to the feeling of making progress on your goals and life priorities.

Even if you don’t love waking up early, it’s a much better long-term bet than putting your day off for one more hour of sleep.

So if you are sleeping in too much or not getting ahead of the day or accomplishing anything, try waking up earlier to get ahead of the day makes me feel accomplished.

It can also make me feel accomplished before noon — which sounds silly, but as we all know, progress counts! And personally, my morning routine is what gets me excited for the rest of the day.

Being able to enjoy quiet moments makes starting my days easy. It makes me eager for each new day because there’s always something interesting happening. Being part of those activities makes waking up early worthwhile!

The rewards are almost instant and they compound over time.

You can reflect on your day ahead

Waking up early to reflect on my day ahead has been a great way to get in a bit of solitude before my workday begins.

When you wake up early, you can prepare for your day ahead without worrying about distractions from other people. It’s just you and your thoughts — an incredible way to start the day.

My favorite part is reflecting on how I want to be better and how I want my life to be different from yesterday — it helps me focus on what matters most to me throughout the day.

If you need help waking up, some good tools are a white noise machine or keeping natural light out with curtains or shades so it will naturally lift your body clock to being awake earlier.

Maybe you don’t like showers first thing in the morning, so sitting by candlelight with coffee, tea, or whatever beverage you prefer may fit into your routine as well.

Use whatever makes waking up simple and more enjoyable for you.

One of the reasons I enjoy getting up early when traveling (because we rarely have control over our schedules) is that it allows me to plan out clearly what I intend to do with my time at various destinations or even during layovers.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed reading about my experience waking up early. I know that waking up in the morning can seem like a difficult task, but it will always pay off in the end.

It may seem challenging at first, but with the right mindset and some determination, you will be able to wake up early every day and reap the benefits.
