Looking into your next flooring project? If so, we’ve got some popular flooring designs and trends that you should consider. Whether you are a traditionalist or a modernist, there is a range of flooring designs to suit your tastes.

Herringbone

Many people look for a flooring design that provides an aesthetic appearance of wood without having to fork out for the real thing. Fortunately, herringbone is a design that can provide the same quality design as real wood, without having to break the bank.

A popular flooring design that has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years is the herringbone pattern. Very similar to Chevron flooring, herringbone uses rectangles to create a lace-style design. If you are looking for stylish and chic flooring, herringbone is for you!

Unlike Chevron flooring, which uses a 45-degree angle for creating the pattern, herringbone uses a 90-degree angle. You may be surprised to find that the term herringbone comes from fish bones. The herringbone pattern mimics the layout of herring fish bones.

Herringbone parquet flooring can be found in both vinyl flooring and laminate flooring. Whichever flooring you decide on, the herringbone look will provide a timeless and classic design that is sure to make a statement. You can also get the herringbone design in different colours too.

Herringbone colours that are popular at the moment include more modern and neutral colours, such as grey, alongside traditional oak wood colours. The herringbone makes a great design choice for your next flooring project to add a touch of class. You could also try the double herringbone pattern!

Parquet pattern

We’ve already covered the herringbone parquet pattern, but given the varying design choices available, it’s worth a separate mention. Parquet patterns can range from diagonal patterns to more stylish wood flooring patterns.

Parquet flooring can include different styles, including chevron, basket weave, mosaic, and Versailles:

The parquet pattern is a traditional wooden floor design that offers a timeless style to any indoor space, such as the living room or hallway. Whether you prefer real wood, luxury vinyl or laminate, you can enjoy a parquet flooring design.

Parquet flooring can cater for both traditional and modern tastes. If you prefer something more stylish and durable, you can also get parquet flooring patterns with engineered wood flooring and solid wood flooring.

Engineered wood flooring uses multiple layers of solid wood veneer (thin slices of wood). There are lots of great benefits you can gain from engineered wood, including a high moisture tolerance. Lacquered wood flooring is also popular, creating a smoother finish to your floor.

If you have underfloor heating, you can install engineered wood floors without the worry of damage to the flooring tiles. That’s because engineered wood is designed for the expansion of the material. Unsure of hardwood or solid wood flooring? Check out this comparison guide.

The natural look

Many flooring patterns mimic the natural look, such as wood, stone, or marble, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only do natural flooring designs look incredibly stylish, but they also provide great psychological benefits too.

Vintage worn timber is a popular flooring trend taking hold due to its nostalgic qualities but can be difficult to maintain. If you want a flooring option that doesn’t require too much maintenance, options, such as luxury vinyl, can provide the same stylish natural look without the high price tag.

Natural flooring will mimic the stylish design of its natural counterpart, without the high price tag or associated drawbacks. You can get a wide range of flooring that mimics:

• Stone

• Wood

• Marble

• Granite

• Slate

Depending on the natural material that is being mimicked, the lookalike flooring can provide a much more cost-effective and durable option. Natural style flooring also offers calming and relaxing qualities too.

Using a natural flooring can help create a space that reduces your stress levels, boosts attention, and lifts your mood. It’s no wonder natural flooring designs have become so popular. You’ll be missing out big time if you don’t consider this in your next flooring project.

Wide planks

Wide planks are another flooring design you should consider for your next flooring project. Many people are now opting to go with wider planks for their flooring as it helps to open up a space and make it seem larger.

Ideally, to help make your room seem more spacious and decluttered, you should opt for wide planks of at least 7” wide (roughly 18cm for those using metric). Traditionally, wide plank flooring is made from wood. However, you can also get wide planks in laminate and vinyl tiles.

Whether you prefer softwood or hardwood floors, you can enjoy a wide plank flooring design. Unfortunately, though, wide plank floor tiles do come with a hefty price tag compared to other flooring choices due to the increased labour and material costs.

An alternative to helping create a more spacious and uncluttered look with your flooring is the installation. You can also maximise the feeling of a space by laying your floor from the longest wall. Doing so helps to create a more natural flow.

Consider either planning your floor to run parallel to a light source or perpendicular (at a right angle) to the doorway to maximise the spaciousness of the room.

No matter what your design preferences are, with the choice of flooring designs you can create a space to suit your needs. If you are embarking on your next flooring project, make sure you consider the flooring ideas and designs above to make the most out of your interior spaces.
