Taking appropriate measures to prepare your home for a floor change will make a big difference in the impact this project will have on your life. Installing floors in a brand-new house is quite different from removing existing ones. If you have floors that will have to be removed and plan on staying home during construction, be prepared for dust to cover every surface. And dust will settle even in rooms where there is no work going on.

If it is at all possible to gather the furniture in one room, make sure to cover everything with tarps, bed sheets, or plastic sheets. Also, if you are going to paint or install wallpaper, do this before the new floors come in. And don’t forget to ask your contractor whether the new floor will allow all your doors to open and close freely or whether they will no longer have clearance. Consider the cost of trimming down the doors and whether they can even be trimmed. If that is the case, a different flooring option may have to be selected.

Here are some additional questions you should get answers to before the floor change gets underway:

Will the installers move the furniture?

Moving the furniture is generally not included in a flooring quote. If they do offer to do it, even for a price, think about your back before doing it yourself. Once it has been determined who will move the furniture, you will still have some work to do. Emptying out your closets, drawers, and cabinets is probably something you want to do yourself.

Where should you store the furniture?

If you live in a large house with a basement or empty rooms plus a garage, leaving the furniture at home might be possible. Otherwise, you may have to consider a storage unit or a container. Taking good care of your furniture before the project starts can make a big difference between protecting your valuable pieces and being frustrated at having to repair them after they have been damaged. You could also rent a pod unit to put your stuff in and keep it on your property.

How long will the installation take?

Depending on your budget and the length of the project, you may want to consider moving out of the house while the floors are being installed. To make it less painful, make the project happen while you take your family on a well-deserved vacation. If you can’t get away and there is no family nearby where you can go crash for three weeks you may look at options such as staying at an Airbnb close by. It definitely makes any home repair a little more palatable when you have a nice place to spend your wait time.

Get Some Information from Your Installers

It’s always better to be informed than to have to guess. Ask your contractor or floor installers whether they will remove baseboards and door frames and if the removal of the old floors is also included in the budget. If the answer to those questions is no, make sure all that is done before they arrive by either tackling it yourself or getting someone to do it for you.

Getting a new floor for your whole house is a treat. But it also something that has to be done right and give you the look you want since this is something you will have to live with for a long time.
