7 Ways to Glow Up Your Morning Routine

Use this time in quarantine to form new healthy habits.

Your first moments of your day are just that — solely yours. Yours to reflect, to relax, to prepare. The importance of a constant routine, whether it be a weekday or weekend, at home or travelling, cannot be understated. No matter what you face after that, should it be an impossible day at work or the darkest problems at home, the sun will rise again and your routine will be there, just for you.

1. Start by lighting a candle.

Wherever you plan on spending part of your morning, keep a candle or two (or three) of your most comforting scents. It could be on your bathroom vanity or kitchen table. Think of it as burning away the night and cleansing the space to welcome the light in. Alternatively, time allowing, you could burn some incense.

The sense of smell, controlled by the olfactory centre, has strong ties to memory, and you should take advantage of this power. You can calm your mind and play around with different scents.

Try to use candles with soy-based waxes as opposed to paraffin waxes that contribute to indoor pollution.

2. Practice self-reflection.

If you meditate, this is a great time to do so. You can even stay in bed, sitting up, cross-legged with your back supported. If it’s not for you, try reflecting on the past and look forward to the future. How long this process takes is up to you. If you want to keep your morning short, try thinking of a goal that you can set for the day, or think about how you can express gratitude to those you will see today.

Journaling is also a common tool for reflection. However, a packed schedule often hinders our ability to put time aside for it. If you try to keep a habit of journaling, perhaps write at night, and put aside a note for yourself for when you wake the next day.

3. Make a cup of joe or put the kettle on, stat.

For many, that first cup of coffee (followed by another two) is what gets you through the day ahead. Some avoid caffeine and opt for tea. Perhaps you have a favourite mug or teacup waiting for you. Whatever you make, get that started and as you wait, you can head to your next step and save some time on the way.

If you’re a coffee addict, try mixing it up with different non-dairy milks and creamers for some earth-friendly options.

4. Drink your water.

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again. Water is water, and as much as you will it, coffee is not. A glass in the morning will get you started, and if it’s one of those chilly winter days, warm it up and put some lemon in there.

To those who are usually don’t drink much water: start carrying a translucent water bottle around with you so you can visually mark your progress throughout the day.

5. Get some SPF into that skin routine.

This could just mean jumping in the shower for five minutes, splashing some water and cleanser on, then some moisturiser after. Or, it could be a more extensive skincare and makeup routine (respect). If it’s the latter, you might as well bring your mug with you. Put on a relaxing playlist, or maybe some jams to hype you up for a busy day.

Either way, make sure you incorporate some SPF into your routine. The sun is responsible for most of the damage your skin faces — so if you work or exercise outdoors, be sure to reapply throughout the day.

If face masks make a regular appearance in your skincare routine, this may not always be the best time for them. As an alternative, try using just under-eye masks while you do your hair or try using a facial oil followed by a water-based moisturiser to seal in all that good stuff for the same effect.

6. Don the uniform.

You heard me. If you’re working from home, put on an outfit that makes you feel both productive and comfortable every day. Sometimes it’s going to be just sweats from the waist down, and that’s okay. Put on a favourite top and some necklaces or rings. Try wearing some fuzzy socks after moisturising — it will be worth it.

If you’re headed to work or class and want to save time, get it ready the night before. Have your bag ready so that you can grab it and go. Don’t forget an extra layer just in case.

7. Put on your game face.

Trust yourself. You’re ready. Mentally prepared for the rest of the day that waits for you. You are capable of handling whatever comes your way like the badass you are.

Now go log onto that zoom meeting, drive into work, start making brunch, or whatever else the day has in store for you. Regardless of what happens today, your bed is waiting for you when it’s over, and your routine will still be there tomorrow.
