7 Lifestyle Factors That You Can Control

In last week’s column, I addressed a reader's concern about insulin resistance (IR) and its impact on weight loss. While genetics can play a role in becoming insulin resistant, there are numerous lifestyle factors that we have complete control over. It made me reflect on the aspects of our lives that we can influence, and how the individuals who are the healthiest, fittest, and most balanced seem to be in control of these factors. Here are seven crucial aspects of our lives that we have the power to shape, ultimately determining whether we live with "dis-ease" and dysfunction or lead a meaningful, fulfilled, and happy life.

1. Mindset: The Foundation of Well-being

One of the most vital elements we can control is our mindset. Our state of mind influences every decision we make regarding self-care. Developing a positive mindset is key, and there are various tools and strategies to help achieve this, such as journaling, meditation, and visualization. By cultivating a better, more positive mindset, we can positively impact all areas of our lives.

2. Quality of Sleep: Unleashing Your Potential

Improving the duration and quality of your sleep can amplify the results of your efforts in all other areas. From enhancing your training and nutrition choices to boosting your focus throughout the day, quality sleep is a game-changer. Fortunately, there are proven methods to enhance sleep, including keeping your bedroom cool and creating an environment free of electronic devices like phones and computers.

3. Stress Management: Navigating Life's Challenges

Experiencing stress is an inevitable part of life, both positive and negative. The key lies in developing effective strategies to manage the negative stress and prevent it from overwhelming us. Engaging in deep breathing exercises, physical activity, or focusing on mundane tasks can help divert our attention from stressors and provide relief.

4. Activity Level: Embracing a Life of Movement

While formal exercise is important, building a lifestyle around physical activity is equally crucial. Adding elements of "inconvenience" to your daily routine, such as walking to run errands, washing dishes by hand, taking the stairs instead of the escalator, or using manual tools instead of automated ones, can contribute to a more active and vibrant life. Reclaiming agency over our daily activities increases our chances of living longer with strength and vitality.

5. Nutrition: The Power of Planning, Preparing, and Packing

Strategic planning, preparing, and packing meals play a pivotal role in nourishing our bodies optimally. Creating a menu for the week that features healthy, delicious, and easy-to-prepare meals, accompanied by a well-thought-out shopping list, enables us to resist the temptation of processed and nutritionally deficient food products. Additionally, carrying food when away from home or storing prepared fresh foods appropriately empowers us to make consistent healthy choices.

6. Progressive Exercise: Moving Beyond Maintenance

Engaging in regular exercise and active living is commendable, but the true magic lies in progressive exercise. Continuously challenging our bodies over time is vital to prevent stagnation, muscle loss, and fat gain. This progression can take various forms, such as increasing exercise intensity, modifying workout routines, or adjusting the frequency and duration of physical activity.

7. Proactive Living: Taking Charge of Your Future

Living proactively involves focusing on the aspects of life that we can control, rather than fixating on those we cannot. By considering the future and taking responsibility for our actions, we empower ourselves to lead purposeful lives. This shift in mindset allows us to make choices that align with our goals and values, enhancing overall well-being.

In conclusion, while certain factors like genetics may influence our

health and well-being, there are numerous lifestyle factors we can control. By nurturing a positive mindset, prioritizing quality sleep, managing stress effectively, embracing an active lifestyle, planning and preparing nutritious meals, engaging in progressive exercise, and adopting a proactive approach to life, we can cultivate a fulfilled and healthy existence.
