Be Prepared.

At some point, you will find yourself in an unexpected situation. It's a part of life and pretty much inevitable. Those unexpected times don't have to mean disaster, though. If you are properly prepared, you can weather them and come out on the other side stronger and in a stable position.

1. Be Proactive About Your Health

Stopping problems before they start is easier than dealing with them one after the other. Make your healthcare provider a partner in your preventative care. Schedule an annual exam and follow through with any recommendations. If you have any concerns, be sure to address them during your visit. Taking care of yourself and adopting a healthy lifestyle can help, too. Follow these pointers to make good choices about lifestyle behaviors:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Increase your exercise so you are getting the recommended 150 minutes each week
  • Drink at least eight glasses of water each day to ensure proper hydration
  • Prioritize sleep so you can get between seven and nine hours each day

2. Know Your Rights

If something does happen or go wrong, you should always establish your rights in that situation. If it is at work, talk to the human resources department or consult your employee manual for guidance. If you are hurt or injured, you might want to talk to an injury attorney to find out the best steps to take. No matter the situation, there are a few guidelines that almost always apply. Start by reporting the situation. Record names, dates and details of any conversations you have about it. Keep detailed and accurate records, preferably in writing or on recordings. Be careful and always find out what the laws are in your area before you record conversations. Escalate as needed, and be willing to stand up for your rights.

3. Carry The Right Types of Insurance

Insurance is an excellent tool to help you deal with unexpected situations. There are four types of insurance that every adult should carry for financial stability. Health insurance covers routine medical care, so you can get that annual physical with little or no cost out of your pocket. It can also help offset the expenses of a medical emergency requiring hospitalization or surgery. Life insurance, whether you opt for a term or permanent policy, is designed to cover final expenses, pay off debt and replace income in the even to your death. Some form of auto insurance is required in nearly every state. It can help cover costs for auto repair, medical and property damage associated with a covered accident. Homeowner insurance will help pay for damage to your home or personal property resulting from vandalism, fire or other disasters. It can also protect you if someone is injured on your property.

4. Start an Emergency Fund

An emergency fund goes a long way to help ease the stress of a host of different situations. If you are returning to school, buying a new home, or expecting a new addition to your family, expenses add up quickly. An accident, injury or the loss of your job can cause a sudden drop in income. Either way, knowing there is money put away will make things easier to face. When you are developing your household budget, aim to put away about 20% of your net pay toward this fund. Choose stable investments since you are sure when you may need to access it.

5. Learn New Skills

One thing that can never be taken away from you is your knowledge. If there is something you have always wanted to learn, there is no time like the present to do it. There are more ways than ever to explore your interests. Community colleges and technical schools offer tons of enrichment and academic courses. MOOCs give a convenient and affordable way to learn new skills or delve deeply into specific topics without ever leaving your home.

Sometimes life throws a curveball your way. Be ready for it by taking steps to ensure your emotional, physical and financial health. Know your rights and advocate for yourself so you can come out on top.
