You can tell the summer season is fast approaching when the warm, bright glow of the sun starts piercing through the spring clouds. All of a sudden, the cold days have been taken over by hot ones, and you feel like you are living in an oven! To counter this sluggish feeling, you turn on your air conditioner and enjoy the cool, refreshing air.

According to air conditioning Central Coast owner Kelly Palmer, it is a good idea to give your appliance a once over to make sure it is working properly before summer comes around. To help you out, here are some tips and tricks you can use to keep your air conditioner unit in good shape regardless of the season.

Your air filters need cleaning

Does your air conditioning unit shake up the warm air during the summer? Do you smell something funny minutes after you turn on your appliance? It might be because of filthy air filters.

The air filters will lose their effectiveness when dirt, dust, fibers, fur, pollen, or anything else gets stuck in them. Air flow will be affected by the blockage, while bad smells and mold would normally build up if the filters stay clogged.

You can resolve this issue by cleaning and maintaining your air filters. If you own a split system, take out the filter, remove any dust with a soft brush, and then rinse the filter with warm water before letting it dry for a few hours. Put the filter back in the unit when it is dry enough, and you will be good to go.

This tip is particularly useful if you live with pets or people who are sensitive to allergens, as you should clean the filters more often to make sure that your air conditioner is running efficiently and providing fresh, cool air. Your electricity bill will also skyrocket with a blocked filter, as the unit has to work harder to pump out cold air.

The outdoor unit must be maintained

After cleaning your air filters, inspect the outdoor condenser unit. You may find it mounted on the roof or hidden along a side wall.

Dust, garden matter, and rubbish can accumulate around the condenser, negatively affecting its efficiency and functionality. If the condenser is blocked and has insufficient venting, your air conditioner will release warmer air and your unit may malfunction. Maintain the outdoor unit at least once a month or right after a weather disturbance.

Animals or insects may also turn your outdoor unit into a home. A gecko or rat may die inside and make a huge, stinky mess if you do not check the condenser from time to time.

Inspect your air ducts

Checking your air ducts and cleaning them serves two objectives. It helps your air conditioner maintain a steady flow of cold air, and the cleansing will take away any debris or dust inside.

Just like the air filters, clear air vents are good for everyone living in the house. People who are sensitive to allergens or are suffering from asthma will feel the difference between clean, quality air and polluted air.

Most homeowners ignore their air conditioner ducts, since it is not easy to climb up to the roof, dust off the vents, and use a broom to reach those hanging spider webs and debris. This is one time you will need to call a professional who can safely clear the ducts and clean the area well to keep your air conditioner functioning properly.

Prepare your house for summer

It is important to clean and maintain your air conditioning unit, but you should also make some changes to your living space to keep you cooler during summer. If your home has carpeting and you can temporarily remove them, the ambient temperature will go down. Keep window blinds down during the day to minimize the amount of sunlight entering your house and heating it up.

Book a reputable contractor

Some of the things you must do to keep your air conditioner in good condition are best left in the hands of experienced, qualified technicians at Central Coast. They have tools that will help them inspect all the components of your appliance so they can suggest any adjustments you must make.

These simple tips will make it easier for your air conditioner to keep things cool, while helping you save money on energy bills. Cheers to a long, hot summer, and staying cool when you receive your electric bills.
