While a complete backyard renovation will probably take more than one weekend (unless you get signed up secretly for one of those blitz-makeover shows on Discovery channel), there are still some mini makeovers you can complete within two days that can nevertheless make a big difference when it comes to appearance and functionality of your backyard.

Now, to pull this off successfully, the main thing to pay attention to would be to have a clear idea of what you want to do.

Changing the details of your makeover plan along the way can throw a major spanner in the works – which can mean you have to spend more time completing the task and which can make the costs of the project skyrocket, too.

In this article, we’re going to talk about what mini backyard makeover projects you can embark on this weekend and complete them within a record time. The great thing about this approach is that you can gradually end up completely changing the appearance of your backyard – one new installation and asset at a time.

Here’s the deal.

1) Install a New Deck

One of the best ways to improve the state of your backyard immediately and make a part of it ‘inhabitable’ and enjoyable to be around – would be to install a new deck that would protrude from underneath the door of your house that leads to your backyard.

The thing is, in setting up a new deck, you're both extending your house in a way, and also making the part of your backyard where the deck spreads over, look tidy and well-kept.

All you need to do to make this happen is measure the area you want to do this in, choose the wooden planks that are to your liking, add some more details such as those small stairs, go over the entire area with some wood protection, and you’re good to go.

2) Add a Garden Path

When it comes to managing the appearance of your backyard, one of the biggest problems can be making the area look tidy and well-organized – especially if you have a large backyard.

Now, the best way to go about this would be to split this big area into smaller patches of land where you can install different ‘stations’ and other points of interest such as fountains, garden gnomes, or other decorations.

To achieve this, a great solution can be to install a garden path.

Not only will a grid of interconnected garden paths make your backyard look well-organized, but the paths themselves will contribute quite substantially to the overall look of the place.

3) Consider Setting up a Gazebo

… or some other structure that both acts as a curiosity piece on its own and has a proper function. Various pergolas, large umbrellas underneath which you can make seating arrangements, or gazeboes all can perform the function of a kind of an oasis amidst your backyard where you can hide from the sun, rain, hail, and other elements.

That said, while gazeboes typically aren’t the biggest structures in civil engineering, they do take some preparatory work to set up.

So, if you mean to complete the entire job within a weekend, you better get some help from your friends and prepare all the materials and blueprints in advance.

4) Set up a Fire Pit

What better way to inspire some caveman feelings and the sense of belonging to the wilderness in the comfort of your home than installing a fire pit in your backyard.

This thing is not that difficult to make and it can make a world of difference in how your backyard comes across once you’ve installed the thing.

Although a fire pit will make the backyard look stylish throughout the day, too, it's the biggest quality that will truly 'come to light' when the night falls. Around this thing, you can throw marshmallow-roasting parties, ghost story-telling sessions, as well as all sorts of games you can play with your friends and family.

5) Fashion Seating Arrangements

Once you’ve established some ‘zones’ in your backyard, the next step can be to organize the seating arrangements.

These will help you sit back and relax with a cold beer in your hand after a hard day of work. Set up one of those gazeboes or umbrellas over it and not rain nor sun will spoil your backyard hangouts.

All you need to do at this point is make sure to keep all that you’ve made well-taken care of, and this doesn’t have to be that tough, provided you have the right equipment. A simple 50ft hose reel, some buckets, and a rake to pick up the leaves once autumn comes, and you’re good to go.

All in all, giving your backyard a makeover can appear like a daunting task at first, but if you spare a couple of weekends here and there and dedicate them toward this goal, you'd be surprised what you can achieve in a relatively short period.
