The way you communicate can make or break your success in any situation. It's up to you to make yourself heard. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to get people listening! We've compiled 15 psychology tricks that will guarantee they won't be able to resist you any longer.

1) Use a simple introduction

For example: "Hello friends and family! I hope this finds you well." This is an effective and polite way of grabbing someone's attention while simultaneously making them feel acknowledged and cared for. You might think this little sentence is insignificant, but it makes a huge difference when it comes down to other people reacting positively towards what you're saying.

2) Start with a compliment

"You've been working hard lately." This is an effective tip because the majority of people value kindness. Also, the way you phrase this can make your compliment more understandable. If you're trying to say they've been working hard, they'll probably be less inclined to understand what you're saying. If, however, you say "you look really good today," they'll most certainly know what you mean.

3) Use a simple question

"Do you want some popcorn?" This is an effective and polite way of grabbing a person's attention while still asking them a basic question.

4) Say the person's name

"Sara, how do you feel about this decision?" This is an extremely effective trick because it makes your listener feel like you actually care about their opinions. People are more likely to care about things when they feel like others do, too.

5) Be specific

"Turn left at the stop light." It's important to be as specific as possible in order to get your point across. If you're trying to tell someone a lot of information, try breaking it down into steps or smaller pieces of information that are easier for them to listen to and follow. For example: "While driving down Main Street, keep your eyes on the road.

6) Speak slower

"Your dog is FINE." Sounding too fast can make it difficult for others to understand what you're saying. To help with this, try speaking slower and more clearly when giving instructions or trying to get your point across.

7) Don't be afraid of pauses

"Hello? Is anyone there?" Avoid being in a hurry when you speak. Pause for a few moments in-between talking in order to give others the time they need to listen and process what you're saying. If it takes longer than a few seconds, then repeat what you said, but slower this time around. This is not a trick you want to overdo, but it will help your listeners to be able to understand what you're talking about and process it faster.

8) Use your hands as an aid

"I'm going to hand you my pen right now." This trick is helpful because people are already naturally inclined to listen when they see something moving in their peripheral vision. To help with the process of having someone listen, use your hands as an aid so things are easier for them. Simply move your hands around, point out objects and describe things that are on display. This will make them more likely to listen and comprehend what you're saying.

9) Stop an d wait

"What? I said, turn left at the stop light." This is an effective trick because it shows your listener that you're serious about what you say. You should always stop talking when they're done listening to you. If they need a little more time to process what you said, then simply walk away from them for a little bit and then resume talking once their ready.

10) Close your eyes

"Imagine you're in China." This is an effective trick because pretty much everyone has the ability to imagine things. Closing your eyes when you're giving instructions can help them to imagine more easily.

11) Avoid idioms

"I'm going to hit the hay now." This is an effective trick because it'll avoid confusing your audience. Instead of using idioms and slang, use words that are a little more easy to understand. For example, you could say "bed" instead of "hay." This will help people to follow your instructions and better be able to understand what you're saying.

12) Use question words

"How long should I pause for?" This is an effective trick because it's one that most people are familiar with. When you pose a question, people will respond to it. Simple as that.

13) Give directions

"Go down Main Street until you see the McDonald's on your right." When giving directions, be sure to provide your listener with relevant details. Otherwise they may become lost or confused while trying to follow along. Also, don't be afraid to stop if anyone becomes confused or doesn't understand what you mean. It's better to take a few minutes to make things clear than it is for them not to understand and get lost or end up going the wrong way in the process of following along with your instructions.

14) Use hand gestures

"Reach out with one hand and grab my pen. Then, take my pen with your other hand and pass it to me." This is an effective trick because people naturally have a tendency to follow along with what they see in their peripheral vision. By using hand gestures, you're helping them to better be able to follow along and react faster.

15) Avoid using the word "no"

"Why are you saying 'no'?" You should always avoid saying "no" because it puts a negative connotation on most things. Instead of telling someone "no," try asking them questions that will help you both come up with a solution together.

Finally

As you can see, there are tons of ways to make yourself better understood when talking to others. Now that you have some new tricks up your sleeve, go out into the world and put them to good use! These tricks have helped me in the past and they'll work wonders for anyone trying to improve their communication skills. You should always be respectful of what others have to say because it helps them to be more receptive towards what you're saying. Also, it's just a good thing overall! Happy speaking!
