One of the most popular work from home jobs is being a freelance writer. That is partially because there is a huge demand for written content so there are many opportunities for someone that would like to work from home as a freelance writer. There is also a lot of people that are willing to provide written content. The quality of your writing and your personal self-promotion will help determine the wage that you are able to get for being a freelance writer.

What Do You Need to be a Freelance Writer?

Obviously, the first thing you will need is writing skills. You can’t be a freelance writer if you are only able to write like you are still on Facebook or like you are texting a friend. You need to be able to write full sentences with reasonably good sentence structure.

The other main things you will need are a dependable computer and good Internet service. The majority of the work you do will be delivered by email or through a software program. You will likely need to do research online, too. You should also have a writing program, like Word, but if you don’t you can use Google Documents or Open Documents to write in. They can both be saved as a Word document if that is what your client prefers.

How Much Can You Get Paid as a Work at Home Freelance Writer?

The amount you can get paid varies from person to person. One of the factors that will determine how much you get paid is your skill. You must be able to deliver quality written content if you want to be paid well. Other things that determine how well you get paid include your reputation, dependability, and networking skills. If you treat it like a business you will be more likely to get better offers.

Another factor that determines how much you get paid is the type of writing you do. You can be a resume writer, a copy writer, a blogger, or even a personal essay writer. There are different market for each type of writing and each market has different standards for pay rates.

Where to Find Jobs as a Freelance Writer

The Internet is filled with job board sites and everyone has their favorites. Many people have a lot of success finding jobs on Craigslist.org while other look to sites that list jobs like the Problogger Job Board and the Freelance Writing Gigs daily list of jobs. There are yet others that never apply for these jobs but find work through networking and making the right contacts.

If you are interested in working from home as a freelance writer, the first thing you should do is write. See if writing is something that you could sustain for a long period of time. You could write in your own blog (which is a good idea anyway as it will help you find your voice) or you could publish articles on sites like Vocal or Medium.

It is good to try writing on several sites to begin with because it will give you a selection of published articles under your own name that you can later use as samples when you apply for jobs. It will also give you good experience in using different publishing platforms. If you decide to write for a large company, you might find that they have their own publishing platform. Getting used to different platforms now can help you in the future.

Freelance Writing is Not a Quick Money Scheme

If you're looking for a way to make some quick money doing easy work, freelance writing is not it. You should do some research and learn from experienced freelance writers. You have to put in some effort to build up a portfolio of work to provide samples when apply for jobs. And you absolutely must learn to market yourself.

If you like writing and learning though, freelance writing may be a great option for you.
