Estheticians are trained to help keep their clients skin healthy through cosmetic treatments, and are only trained to do non-invasive treatments that work with the superficial layers of the skin. Some non-invasive treatments they offer include facials, superficial chemical peels, body treatments, and waxing, and the demand for these services is growing. Although skin therapists are not allowed to diagnose skin conditions, prescribe medications, suggest treatments, give botox injections or deep chemical peels, they can offer advice on what products you should use, and tell you what your particular skin type is.

Where do Estheticians Work and How Do You Start?

Estheticians mainly work in day spas, salons, med-spas, and sometimes they work closely with dermatologists to give complementary procedures to patients. Some skin therapists are known to be entrepreneurs, and they often look for office spaces that are for rent to attend to their clients. To become an esthetician you are required to be licensed in 49 states, with the exception of Connecticut. To receive a license you are required to complete 260-600 hours of training at a beauty school that has been accredited. After completing your required hours, you will need to pass a written, practical, and technical exam. Following the completion of all exams, you will become licensed through state board of cosmetology or the department of health. Your education in this field never really does stop, because of all the updates in skin care, so you will have to expand your knowledge with postgraduate education.
