Why I Check My Stats Daily?

Do you think it's a good thing?

Looking at the stats has been given a bad rap.

The basic argument is that looking at the numbers can be a huge deterrent in the creative process because it blocks creativity due to an excessive focus on numbers rather than the art itself.

Daily, we are reminded by the naysayers and detractors to:

*Focus on the craft

*Work on improving your writing skills

*Let your work speak for itself

*Honor the art, not the numbers

And while I actually respect and agree with the advice…

And I wrote yesterday (here) about how one set of stats actually really depressed me…

I still love looking at my stats daily.

Now this is a bit of a side note, but I also weigh myself daily… And there are many who make the argument that this is something that is not healthy or beneficial, as well. But nevertheless, I weigh myself daily (I’d actually go crazy if I couldn’t) for many of the same reasons that I read my stats everyday.

Reading the stats is actually very calming for me (most days). It’s one of the first things I like to do when I wake up in the morning after I get myself together — and yes, after I get on the scale.

It’s just a nice and satisfying reminder that I am working towards something, reaching others, and making progress. There is something spiritually fulfilling in knowing that you are doing something you love and that you are hopefully connecting and resonating with others in the process.

In addition to being calming, looking at the stats is a huge motivator for me. As a beginner writer here on the platform, it’s not like my numbers are huge or anything…but just seeing the numbers gradually go up — in any capacity — really fuels me.

As a blogger, there was a long stretch of time where my blog was not getting any traction…and I do mean any. So, I know what it’s like to pour your heart into something and not have any viewership at all. But it definitely motivates me to know that there are some people hopefully getting value from my writing.

Lastly, looking at the stats keeps me focused and on my toes. If my story goes from 5 views to 10 views…and so on, I’m revved up and ready to write my next story. It’s exciting!

And it helps me to be constantly creating and looking forward to a new goal!

So you see, looking at the stats is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s all about your perspective and how you use it and the meaning you give to it.

It can be good or bad, a blessing or a curse, a detractor, or a motivator…it’s up to you…

It only rules you if you allow it to.

In closing, I just want to encourage everyone to stay positive!

My instincts are telling me this a place where I can thrive, be vulnerable, and be myself…

I’ve been enjoying reading all the contributions of the many writers on this platform and I can’t wait to begin chronicling my journey as a regular contributor to the site.

As I continue on this platform, I hope to inspire and enlighten and to be inspired by others. I hope to bring a different perspective and to be enlightened by other fresh perspectives.

I welcome all advice on being successful on this platform. Any advice you can offer in the comments is much appreciated!

What are your thoughts on checking your stats daily??
