The Palestinian cause refers to the ongoing struggle for self-determination and statehood by the Palestinian people in the region of historic Palestine. The origins of this cause can be traced back to the late 19th century when Zionist movements started advocating the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. This led to tensions and conflict between Jewish and Arab communities.

In 1948, the state of Israel was officially established, resulting in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes, creating a refugee crisis that still persists today. Since then, the Palestinian cause has been defined by the struggle for Palestinian refugees' right of return, the end of Israeli occupation, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Over the years, various peace negotiations, international resolutions, and efforts to achieve a two-state solution have taken place, but the conflict remains unresolved. The Palestinian cause has gained international recognition and support, with many countries and organizations advocating for Palestinian rights, while others have taken a pro-Israel stance. The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has caused immense suffering and continues to be a major source of tension in the Middle East.

So who are the bad guys ?

Basically, there are no good or bad guys in this conflict. The Palestinian leadership want to genocide Israel. The Israelis constantly blow up and shoot and kill Palestinian civilians, who just want to live in peace. And Israel is, inch by inch, stripping the Palestinians of their land.

The real thing is that Israel has vastly more power to do damage than the Palestinians, but is doing damage slowly over time; HAMAS is mostly powerless to do more than pick off a few Israelis at a time.

This conflict illustrates the problem of nationalism - every inch of land on Earth has been occupied by multiple different groups in its history and those borders change and in the past, groups mixed. But now everyone wants to sort themselves out into mono-national states.

Which generally means killing or driving off other nations.

The Israelis are harsh because they live in the shadow of the Holocaust, where half the Jews on Earth were killed, and of 2000 years of persecution, where living with non-Jews meant you might be murdered at any time.

Those Jews living in Israel see themselves as finally safe, and they will do anything to stay safe, including slowly grinding the Palestinians into the dirt. They view this as their homeland.

But the Palestinians also see it as their homeland - they’re a bunch of different groups who all moved into the area in the last 2000 years; some are Christians, but most are Moslems. The Palestinians have largely been governed by foreign powers - the Romans, then the Caliphates, then various states based in Syria or Egypt (with an interlude of Crusader rule), then the Ottomans, then the British.

Ever since the Caliphates took over, Moslems dominated Palestine, but Christians and Jews were allowed to live in second class status under what was basically an apartheid system where non-Moslems had less rights and paid special taxes.

The British were supposed to set things up for independence after WWI under the Mandate system, but instead, they just kind of sat back and let things spiral out of control as Jews fled to Palestine, culminating in them basically screaming “OLLY OLLY OXEN FREE” and running for the hills; this was the signal in 1948 for all of the area’s neighbors to invade to try and snuff out the Jews.

Instead, they got their ass kicked. Most Palestinians fled into the West Bank (seized by Jordan) or Gaza (seized by Egypt). Israel beat its neighbors again in 1956, 1967, and 1973. The 1967 war led to the occupation of the heavily Palestinian West Bank and Gaza areas and there’s been trouble ever since.

I found it informative, without being preachy or biased. The stupidity of war has long concerned me, regardless of who thinks they are right. No one really wins. Now it is a bad movie played through the news each day and we become complacent. Since this new conflict, Ukraine is a distant memory. Thanks for posting this.
