Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way

In life, success and failure are separated by a mere hair's breadth. The outcome depends entirely on the path you have traversed. To reach the pinnacle of glory, you must pay the price in both sweat and tears. Failure is merely a test designed to help you discover what it is you truly desire. Willpower is the vital elixir that imbues individuals with the strength and conviction to surmount every obstacle—transforming the impossible into the possible and bringing miracles to life. "Where there is a will, there is a way"—this adage constantly surfaces in my mind, serving as a personal philosophy and a guiding compass that leads me through every thorny trial and empowers me to face every challenge life throws my way.

A philosophy of life consists of the core beliefs and perspectives regarding existence that shape an individual's worldview. Such a philosophy can steer us in the right direction, yet it can also be the very cause of failure or grave errors. Therefore, it is imperative that each person carefully selects a philosophy of life that is sound and truly suited to their own nature. "Where there is a will, there is a way"—here, the "way" serves as a metaphor for the success and happiness that every individual strives to attain throughout their life. A path emerges only where there is willpower; for no glory ever comes to us without our own personal struggle, sacrifice, and diligent effort. Life never closes its doors to those who possess willpower and the determination to strive. For when one door closes, another invariably opens—and within that opening lies a path uniquely reserved for you. Willpower bolsters our faith, enabling us to discern our direction, envision the future, and discover the path that lies ahead. It empowers us to achieve success and fulfillment in both our careers and our personal lives, allowing us to take our destiny into our own hands.

Lu Xun, the renowned Chinese writer, once observed: "On the road to success, there are no footprints of the lazy." The path to success is by no means easy; it is fraught with thorns and challenges. A lazy individual—one who merely waits for opportunities to fall into their lap and relies entirely on others—will soon become a useless person and a burden to society. However, for a person possessing an unwavering will and unshakable determination, every difficulty and challenge can be overcome. Indeed, one could say that willpower is the vital driving force that instills the faith and strength needed to sweep away every obstacle lying ahead. In the wake of failure, people often find their souls overwhelmed by anguish and despair. It seems that each of us, at some point, has fallen into a bottomless abyss, unable to find our true path forward.

Questions constantly plague our minds as we dwell on the past, fearing that we might fail once again. With our willpower diminished and our spirits broken, we find ourselves trapped in a state of deadlock. I believe that every one of us has, at some point, experienced such a state of mind. I can fully empathize with the feelings of a drowning person desperately reaching for a lifebuoy—of someone battling for their very life against Death itself, minute by minute. These are feelings that I will likely never forget. I still remember as vividly as if it were yesterday the day I passed my high school entrance exams: the tears streaming down my parents' faces touched my heart deeply. My mother embraced me with overwhelming joy, while my father stood silently watching us. A fleeting smile crossed his face, warming my heart to its very core. The sensation of having come so close to failing had left me feeling hollow and vulnerable; I felt utterly insignificant and useless. Had my willpower been crushed at that moment, I might not be the person I am today. “Look toward the sun, and the shadows will fall behind you”—by looking toward the future rather than dwelling on a painful past or fantasizing about a bygone golden age, we will discover the right path for ourselves. Rising again after every stumble grants us greater experience and allows us to glean invaluable lessons, for our willpower lends strength to both our minds and our feet. Through this inner resolve, we can push aside invisible barriers to advance along the path we have chosen. Indeed, willpower is the sole gateway to success and happiness. “Actually, there are no roads on earth; people walk on them, and then they become roads” (Lu Xun)—to discover one's path, one must possess the willpower to strive and rise up; only then can one achieve the goals one has set for oneself. Character determines destiny.

“The Swallow” and “The Iron Horse” are the epithets used to describe the extraordinary talent of Dr. Glenn Cunningham, once the fastest miler in the world. After suffering severe burns to both legs at the age of five, Glenn Cunningham was diagnosed by doctors as a hopeless case. They predicted that the boy would be permanently disabled and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. “The boy will never walk again,” they asserted. “There is absolutely no chance.” The doctors examined Glenn Cunningham’s legs, but they failed to comprehend the spirit of the boy himself. Refusing to accept the doctors' verdict, he remained steadfast in his determination to learn to walk again. Lying in his bed—his legs red and raw, covered in scars where the skin had yet to heal—Glenn made a solemn vow: “By next week, I will step out onto the road; I *will* walk.” And Glenn did exactly that. His mother later recounted the many times she would pull back the curtain to look out the door. He looked out and saw Glenn reaching up to grasp an old plow in the garden. Gripping its handles, the boy began the struggle to force his bony, twisted legs into action. Every step he took was a painful ordeal. His face contorted constantly, and sweat poured from him as if he had just stepped out of a bath.

Yet, the boy remained steadfast. Gradually, he was able to take short steps, and before long, he could walk almost normally. When he began to run on legs crisscrossed with burn scars, his determination became even more evident. “I always believed I could walk, and I did. Now, I am striving to run faster than anyone else.” And he proved that he could make good on his words. That boy grew up to become a champion miler, setting a world record with a time of just 4 minutes and 6 seconds in 1934. He was later honored as the century's most outstanding athlete at the legendary Madison Square Garden. Another truly admirable example of someone who faced a series of crushing setbacks yet never gave up is Walt Disney.

Shortly after establishing the Disney Brothers Studio, he created the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Due to his inexperience, he signed a production contract under which he would produce the animated films, but the Mintz company would retain ownership of the characters. The films achieved great popularity, but the distributors ruthlessly cut their creator out of the deal. Disney declared: “I will never work for anyone else again.” Following this failure with the Mintz distribution company, a disheartened Walt Disney returned to California. Walt realized that his new studio was on the verge of dissolution unless he invented a new character. Upon returning to California, the first sketch he produced was that of an engaging, spirited mouse with a distinctly cartoonish appearance. To bring this film to life, Disney was forced to sell his beloved sports car.

On November 18, 1928, Mickey Mouse made his debut in New York City to resounding success. Haunted by his previous failures, Walt strove to distribute his animated films to every single theater. Yet another lesson emerged: while Mickey Mouse was generating wealth, the actual revenue flowing back to Disney remained meager. Finally, in 1930—after seven years in Hollywood—Disney conceded and sold his studio, signing a distribution agreement with Columbia Pictures. Under this deal, Columbia agreed to distribute his films for a fee of $7,000 per picture—with the proceeds split evenly between the two parties—while Disney retained full ownership of the copyrights. Columbia Pictures subsequently distributed Disney’s animated shorts across the globe. By 1930, Mickey Mouse had evolved into a figure of worldwide interest.

Before long, Disney recognized the immense commercial potential inherent in Mickey. He had matured, acquiring the experience necessary to anticipate and preempt potential setbacks. It was not that the business world had become any less treacherous; rather, perhaps those obstacles simply appeared insignificant in the eyes of a titan like Walt Disney. Driven by sheer determination, they achieved spectacular success. They, too, had experienced the ordinary sorrows and disappointments of everyday life. Yet, it was precisely in those moments that they revealed the exceptional qualities that enabled them to press ever forward—even as so many others chose to surrender and give up. Each of us must strengthen our faith and trust in ourselves; regardless of the circumstances, we must always press forward to successfully accomplish every task and achieve success in life.

From this moment on, each of us should define a clear purpose for our lives and remain true to ourselves in every situation. We must exert our utmost effort, maintain unwavering determination, and never falter in the face of any difficulty; we must always continue to dream and aspire, for willpower is the master key that unlocks every door in life.
