Have you ever stopped to think about what would happen or what you would do if you were ever injured at work?

This is a question every employee should give at least some consideration to, if only to find out what your company's policy is, when it comes to employees getting hurt on the job.

I never once gave it any thought, so when I ended up with a work related injury, I was completely in the dark on what to expect. My complete lack of knowledge about the process ultimately cost me thousands of dollars.

This happened to me, but it doesn't have to happen to you.

The information and viewpoints contained in this story should not, in any way, be viewed as legal, medical, or professional advice.

Do you know your company's policy about get injured at work?

I'm a former employee who went through the experience of filing a worker's compensation claim against the company I worked for.

That is why the views and actions I describe, are written to convey what I did when this happened, and not necessarily suggesting you take the same path.

I've tried to provide a few standard details on what to know about workers compensation claims; speaking as a former injured worker. Feel free to use these facts about filing on-the-job injury claims, and do some further investigating on your own.

The biggest mistake that I made, as I look back at the whole experience, is not knowing what to expect, from my job, from my attorney, from the insurance companies, and from the process in general.

If I give any advice at all, it's only this: Make it your business to discover how the information I provide may or may not apply to you and your own work situation.

3 Important points to keep in mind if you get injured at work.

The following three important points to keep in mind in case you ever get injured at work might actually save you some money one day.

I wish I had known these three little points when this happened to me and I would have received more of what was entitled to me.

The 3 points are:

#1 - Do not overestimate what a lawyer will do for you.

This is not about what the lawyer is capable of doing for you, but rather what they actually "will" do- meaning just because they have the know how, doesn't mean they will use it.

#2 - Start determining what to expect from the very beginning of your case.

Do your own due diligence and research what goes on in the proceedings and the claims process. This will help you be more prepared, plus save you a lot of unnecessary worry.

#3 - Recognize the importance of timing and waiting too long to file a claim.

Don't be an indecisive injured worker who is hesitant about stopping work, even when you're in pain and the doctor recommends you stop.

Final Thoughts

Many of the valuable tips we read about online may not immediately relate to our current situation. And sometimes we learn information that is more useful to someone we know instead of us.

Can you or someone you know benefit from this information about being injured on the job? If not, it is still useful information to be aware of, especially if you're still in the workforce, and you're employed by someone else.

Remember:

  • Being forewarned and full of knowledge about your companies policy on this matter can help you, if you ever need to file a claim.
  • Knowing what to expect in the even of an on the job injury can help you decide to file a claim in a timely matter.
  • Having knowledge about the process can help you be prepared, prevent you from worrying, and possibly gain you more money.
