The Chemistry of Dealing with the Soft Stuffs Inside and Outside

“Wetware: Human brain cells or thought processes regarded as analogous to, or in contrast with, computer systems.”-----Oxford English Dictionary

Chemistry is everywhere and the mastery is to grasp it effectively

We all read chemistry in high schools. Chemistry deals with the composition of an object. More specifically, It also analyses the proportion of each component, which ultimately produces the finished goods. For example, think of a delicious dish.

Composition and proportion is important for being excellent at anything.

The person who prepares the dish knows properly which ingredients are necessary and at what proportion. We find a lot of persons who know about the components but do not have any knowledge about the best proportion, resulting in a bad dish.

The car engine and our body engine is almost similar and operate in the same way

We human beings are no exceptions. Human-machine is run by two fluids; one is the neurotransmitter and the other one is the hormone. The person who is well aware of the chemistry between these two can be a master of his/her own body, mind and soul.

Let's clarify the whole matter with the example of an engine that needs two fluids to operate smoothly as well. One is its fuel, petrol or diesel, which requires a spark before it ignites and produces energy to run the machines. Another is the Oil which does not need any spark but ensures the smooth operation of its body parts. Below is an awesome video by Prof. Winston, which shows how our brain works.

As already mentioned, the chemicals which our brain produces are known as neurotransmitters and these are fuels of our body. These also get sparked and produce energy which makes us alive and operative. The neurotransmitters emit another type of fluids in our body which is known as hormones. Hormones are like oil in a car machine. These make sure that our body is being operated properly.

How leadership is Connected to Neuroscience

The neurotransmitters in the brain trigger certain hormones to emit. Hormones are responsible for creating certain emotions in us. The emotions are fear, anger, disgust, shame, sadness, surprise, joy or excitement, love or trust. Among these fear, anger, disgust, shame and sadness are called survival emotions and Joy or excitement, love or trust are known as attachment emotions. Surprise is called a potentiator because it is responsible for flipping a response state from survival to attachment and from attachment to survival state. Survival emotions are associated with releasing cortisol hormone in our body, which is responsible for all types of avoidance, escape and survival activities. On the other hand, attachment emotions secrete oxytocin, dopamine and noradrenalin which are responsible for creating good feelings in us.

All these emotions together make feelings in a human. We can compare the whole thing with a prism. When all the colors pass through a prism, it combines into a single color which is white. The feeling is like the white color.

Prism: all color combines into a single color, white similar to feelings

Similarly, when all of our emotions combine together, it becomes our feeling. In the picture below, it is seen clearly.

The Prism of Emotions: Our feeling is the combination of all our emotions.

Now it is the priority of a human being himself/herself. Most importantly, the sound balance between neurotransmitters and hormones determines how well a human can perform the executive activities of one’s life such as marketing, leadership, strategy, sales, production management etc and live a healthy happy peaceful life with a better relationship.

One alternative for him/her is to use fear, anger, disgust, shame, sadness and get the work done. The other alternative is to use attachment emotions, joy and trust, to get the work done. The former one was massively utilized in the past.

Anger is a survival emotion

In the most recent research, it is proven that attachment emotions, love/joy and excitement, drive humans to do the tasks in the most effective way and produce the most optimum outputs. Attachment emotions are the main focus of Neuroscience which is proven to promising in the field of leadership.

Attachment emotions are the heart of Neuroscience for Leadership

Now as a human being, it is your decision how you will run your own life, family, organization etc. Which set will you choose as the chemistry of your life? But it is for sure that a leader who knows the best combination of the two fluids is the most productive leader who not only produces the highest output but also ensures the wellbeing of all.

Practicing Neuroscience of Leadership in Families

Neuroscience for the family is essential

Family is the place where children get familiar with leadership and learn this most critical skill from their parents. That is why it is essential that parents have the knowledge of neuroscience and constantly adhere to that in making each decision regarding their kids. The most beneficial thing is that the young fellow’s personality will also be shaped accordingly from an early age.

Parents have to interact with multiple situations and environments for earning a livelihood and managing families. They are treated in various ways in different places. For example, fathers may work in an environment where the situation is harsh and most of the colleagues can be hostile. In that case, this environment may play a significant role in molding his personality as he spends a significant amount of time each day for years there. This set of behavioral patterns may, subsequently, affect his family’s overall personality as well and shape their kid’s leadership characteristics. If the parents focus on survival emotions, their children learn the same. Similarly, if they prioritize attachment emotions, the kids learn and use those in their later lives.

As a result, parents must prioritize attachment emotions over survival emotions for getting things done by their kids. This will make their children more confident and creative. Moreover, an enduring longer-lasting relationship will be built between parents and children, which will solely be based upon joy, trust, love and excitement. Most importantly, it will help emit the neurotransmitters in their brain which will trigger positive and balanced hormonal secretion, resulting in healthy and resilient humans throughout their whole life.

Ignoring the Difficulty in Assessing the Collective Effects of Neuroscience

Ignoring negativity is important

In the case of applying Neuroscience in our personal, work and family life, we prioritize the attachments emotions such as trust and love. But at times, it is very difficult to assess the collective results for adopting this approach in every sphere of our life. Consequently, We may become hopeless quickly and give up.

For example, in a company, survival emotions (fear, anger, disgust, sadness) are used for getting the done for years. This company has been doing well economically for years. It fixes its goals, deploys resources and achieves those by the hard-working employees. It has never thought beyond that. Workers really work hard and earn their livelihood.

But most recently, it has decided to incorporate neuroscience into its leadership style, prioritizing attachment emotions over survival ones. After few months, the company finds that its employees are much more enthusiastic to work for them and also feel proud to work there.

But What about Hard Times?

hard Times may pose a threat to applying Neuroscience

The concept of neuroscience mostly deals with soft stuff like the brain, emotions and feelings etc. It fosters attachment emotions. The environment, where fear, anger or disgust are encouraged to get the work done, may consider neuroscience as a too much compromising approach. Moreover, there may be people who may think of it as a weakness of an organization and may utilize it as an opportunity. Therefore, many companies may become skeptical about its result and get back to the previous paradigm again.

It takes a long time to build and nurse a paradigm where neuroscience is prioritized. Suddenly adopting this approach may not bring fruitful results, especially in the atmosphere, where people are habituated to using survival emotions.

Interactivity with the surrounding is one of the most complex and intricate mechanisms. In that case, practicing neuroscience in own family and work life may not be rewarding sometimes as the surroundings can be of different paradigms and may not get back the same.

In a word, our mentality towards assessing our success based on hard material worldly things need to be changed first if we want to incorporate neuroscience in personal, family and work-life, valuing the soft matters like emotions, feelings or overall wellbeing.

Things become tougher when we have scanty resources, more humans in a small place and an overwhelming onward march of capitalism where monetary profits are first considered. But Neuroscience is the most enduring approach to leadership which needs to be nursed for a long period. then, It will certainly uphold everybody’s well-being. In addition, it ensures sound relationships and keeps everybody healthy, happy peaceful.

The inspiration for writing the above article has mainly come from reading the book " Neuroscience for Leadership" by Kitty Chisholm, Paul Brown, and Tara Swart. I believe this is a must read for each individual.

A revolutionary Book written in the Filed of Neuroscience
