What Are You Looking For?

The Question Leaders Hate To Ask

I saw a question this morning from a group I am associated with that hit me as hard as the first time I thought it.

"What are you looking for?"

For some reason, it struck me harder today than I thought it would.

I'm not sure if it is because there are so many things I am looking for, or if I am still looking deeper for something.

Both options are extremely viable, depending on how you think of the question.

On one end, there are many things I personally seek:

  • How do we create Legendary Leaders faster?
  • How do we create lasting change in our organizations?
  • How do we fix our mindset when so many have been brainwashed with false information?
  • How do you fight against organizations that want to keep people compliant and prevent them from reaching their potential?
  • How do we create a brighter future where we can all thrive?
  • How do we stop things from getting worse?

I think about these questions daily as I dive deeper into scientific studies, research, writing, and helping clients.

It is also important to ask this as a Leader as well because we often don't do it before we act.

  • What are you looking for with your team?
  • What are you looking for with your organization?
  • What is it you are seeking with your clients?
  • When you interact with others, what are you hoping will happen?
  • If you scream or yell or discipline others, will it provide what you hope?
  • The cool new technology that has come out, is it actually going to provide what you are looking for?
  • The new service or product you want to put into the world, will it provide what you are looking for?
  • Is what you are doing right now providing what you need?
  • Do your goals align with what you are looking for in life?

Most of the time Leaders don't think this deeply, they are only looking at today and not thinking about the long term.

It is also why 80% of organizations fail in the first 5 years of business, and 80% of the remaining organizations fail in the next 5 years (94% Fail in the first 10 years).

Legendary Leaders need to have a much further grasp of time and how what they do relates to what they are looking for.

When they don't, they become a simple statistic of continued failure.

But there is also this feeling that I have, that even though there is a lot of good being done in my work, there is still something... else?

It is difficult to express what most people call, "gut feelings".

I would actually argue it is more of a "heart feeling" if we are being "scientifically" correct due to it being a function of Neurocardiology.

However, no matter what we may call it, it is what I am feeling.

There is something that I am looking for still within all of this.

Though it is entirely possible that this is a question that also never is fully answered.

In life, there are some things that never end.

They are just Cycles that will continuously occur.

Perhaps, even though we can answer this question with some definites, maybe there is another deeper level answer.

Maybe, what it is we seek is an adventure, a journey, one that tests us and continues to grow as we continue our lives.

It could be that this path is never meant to actually end, only to change and adapt and become something larger over time.

Sometimes, the question becomes the answer.

What am I looking for?

What I am looking for could simply be new ways to ask, "What am I looking for?"

Some questions are never meant to fully be answered, and the question itself is what you were looking for the entire time.
