Vocal Media Vs Medium: Which Writing Platform Is Best For Making Money?

Vocal Media and Medium are two writing platforms and yet both have a business model very different but at the same time very similar. I am both, a writer on Medium as well as on Vocal Media. This gives me a good opportunity to compare both the platforms and find out which platform is the best?

Both the platforms are very different in many aspects. Before i started writing on Vocal, i was on Medium and i loved the experience there. I love to write on Medium because of its attractive editor. Medium editor is like a blank page where you write your thoughts or almost anything of your choice. In this article, we will discuss some of the things that make Medium and Vocal Media different as well as those that make the site very similar.

1. The subscription cost:

Medium costs $5/month or $50/years, in one of the articles we discussed, Is Medium membership worth it? in which we discussed some of the perks of being a Medium member. I think it is one of the best things to do if you going to take Medium seriously. Getting a Medium membership could help you to read unlimited articles on Medium for a month. Some portion of your revenue goes to the writers that read the content.

Vocal Media is a free platform. You don't need a membership to read content on Vocal but they have a program called "Vocal+" which is more aligned toward content creators on Vocal. It costs $9.99/month or $99 a year. If you are in Vocal+ then you will receive $6 per 1,000 views, a 2% service charge on tips, and can get access to challenges.

2. How Medium and Vocal pay its creators?

Medium has a system called "Medium member read time" on Medium, you can make when you get reads from people who are Medium paying members and you get compensated for the amount of time they have spent on reading your article. On Medium, external, non-medium member views will have a very little advantage.

The good thing about writing on Vocal Media is that every single view matters here; Vocal doesn't discriminate based on geography or the source of the traffic you are getting. All you need is getting real human views and you can make money writing on Vocal Media.

Here is a comprehensive guide to making money on Vocal Media:

3. The community feature on Medium Vs Vocal:

This is why i love Medium over Vocal. Medium has a community feature which means that if i want to follow a writer, i can do that. If i want to follow a publication, i can do that. I can comment on other stories. Medium is a social media website designed for writers and has a search engine optimized which means that you get a higher ranking when you published a story on Medium compared to your own blog.

Vocal Media isn't about community building. There is no such feature here. You can't follow a writer on Vocal, there are publications on Vocal but you can't follow them. There is no feed of articles like Medium has and you can't comment on other writer articles. The platform is just for the sole purpose of writing. Vocal has a huge disadvantage in this area.

4. Publishing on Medium Vs Vocal Media:

On Medium, publishing is very easy. You make an account on Medium and start writing and it will be published and will be live on the Internet in the next few minutes. You can also submit your Medium article to different Medium publications and can reach thousands of people. There is curation in in-place that hugely promotes your articles.

On Vocal, when you are done writing an article, you have to send it to Vocal Media mods who will review your article. Most of the time, they accept every article if they follow their submission guildines. 98% of the stories I have submitted are accepted while the rest 2% were rejected because of a few minor errors like placing a wrong link or not meeting the minimum word counts of a 600-words article.

5. The Business Model and sustainability:

Medium business model is very easy to understand. They have a subscription-based business model like Netflix. They charge a bare minimum of $5/month to read unlimited articles for a month. This type of business model is very sustainable. The more quality content creators Medium got, the more people will opt for paying this minimum amount of money to Medium.

The Vocal Media business model is still vague. If you are a normal content creator, you make $3.8 per 1,000 views but if you choose to pay $9.99 a month, for very similar views, you made $6 per 1,000 views. This means that any content creator who gets more views will be disadvantage financially to Vocal Media. Vocal Media is definitely a legit company but I am struggling to understand their business model.

Which writing platform is the best for writers among Medium Vs Vocal Media?

Comparison of Vocal Media and Medium is a bit hectic job for me. I make money and write on Both platforms. Medium is still the platform where i make most of the money because I am writing on that platform for over a year now. I recently (Just two months ago) started writing on Vocal Media and i am confident that this platform will be my highest revenue source in the coming bless 2021 year.

If you have an opportunity to make money writing on both the platforms then why not use this opportunity to write and make money.
