I am proud to be a member of a new workers co-operative that was established this year (2017) in the UK. We offer transcription services for research interviews to academics and students, amongst other clients.

What do we do?

We offer audio transcription services. We can make written transcripts of audio or video research interviews. We can also make accessible transcripts of podcasts or videos. We work with academics, students and others. We understand the importance of confidentiality and a fast, accurate service. As a cooperative we work together as a team to get your work done quickly and efficiently.

Who are we?

A team of members run Typology together as a co-operative. We are all graduates with a variety of qualifications and experience of academic environments. We are trained and experienced in audio transcription.

What is a workers co-operative?

A co-operative is an ethical form of business which is owned and run directly by its members. All our members have an equal say in running the business together. As we don’t have to answer to shareholders we can pay ourselves a fair wage while offering a competitive price to our customers.

What is your policy on privacy and use of information?

We will keep all information contained in transcripts you send us confidential and won’t share data with anyone not involved in the transcription. If you have a specific confidentiality document for your project that you want us to sign just let us know.

What is your pricing system?

We aim to offer a fairly-priced service. We charge per audio minute and our prices will vary depending on the sound quality and number of speakers.

£1.10 per minute standard rate

£1 per minute discounted rate for students without funding for transcription

Please add 0.25p per minute for poor sound quality or transcriptions with more than 2 speakers.

We may be able to offer discounted rates for community projects that we want to support, please contact us for details.

Specialist services such as discourse analysis transcription may be available at additional cost, please contact us to discuss this.

Epilogue

If you're interested in finding out more about workers cooperatives, here are 3 of my favourite exciting local projects. I've specifically chosen projects which are within close geographical proximity to TypeOlogy, being based in the North of England, and in my home city, Leeds. This is to show off the rich variety of workers cooperatives that can be found making a real difference to their communities in one small corner of the world!

Warf Chambers

www.wharfchambers.org

"An ethical, affordable and sustainable city-centre venue in Leeds with multiple uses. In the daytime there will be a cafe and a community workshop space, and in the evening a members' club will open a bar and host live and pre-recorded music events. In conjunction with the members' club we aim to provide a flexible space for art, film, music, politics and discussion that brings together people from communities across Leeds."

Leeds Bike Mill

leedsbikemill.org

"Leeds Bike Mill is a community focused bike recycling and training co-op. It was born out of discussions at the Pedallers’ Arms community bike workshop about the need for a large-scale bicycle recycling project in the Leeds area and the need for affordable second-hand bikes."

Leeds Bread Co-op

www.leedsbread.coop

"Leeds Bread Co-op is a Leeds based artisan bakery. We are passionate about sourdough and slowly fermented breads. Using organic, locally-sourced ingredients, we bake delicious breads, five times a week, for delivery and for selling at local markets."

I hope that gave you a flavour for the exciting cooperative working spaces happening in West Yorkshire, England.
