This article will tell you exactly how to build your first ad, step by step.

Why Facebook?

Before I tell you how to build your first Facebook ad, I would like to consider the revenues and costs behind Facebook ads. It is a bit of a waste of your money to invest money in this without having any idea what the bottom line will yield, right?

Therefore, make sure that you are clear in advance about what you want to achieve through Facebook ads. Set a specific goal.

Facebook is a powerful medium to get in touch with your target group for little money. Provided you use it in the right way. Facebook is the largest social media network in the world.

The chances are that your target group can be found here, and that makes it an exciting platform for companies to be present here. For example, the number of Facebook business pages increased by 33% in 2016!

Note: advertising on Facebook is getting more and more expensive. It is a game of supply and demand. You currently pay only 0.20 euros per click; this can quickly become 2.50 to 3.00 euros within 3 years. As more and more companies are discovering Facebook ads, now is THE time to get in and start realizing cheap traffic to your website with Facebook.

What is your goal?

Then think about the question: What can a lead (someone above average interested in your product) cost?

How many clicks do you want to realize, and how many new customers can you get from these clicks? What is the conversion of your website? In other words: what proportion of your website visitors make a purchase or leave data on a sales/lead page?

The nice thing about online marketing is that we can measure everything. If you do this correctly, you will know exactly what each euro spent results in.

You can already start advertising on Facebook for an amount of 35 euros per week with a minimum budget of 5 euros per day. This makes Facebook a beautiful platform for companies to get in touch with potential customers.

Generating page likes is not a goal. Ask yourself why you want to generate these likes. And who do you want to get likes from? What would you do if you had 100,000 likes?

Another goal that I regularly hear is: I want to generate more leads. This is not concrete enough. What is the lead? How many leads do you want to generate?

Sorry for my assurance. People think carefully about these kinds of questions.

Make it concrete for yourself.

If you do not have answers to these questions, then you have not thought about it well enough is my thesis. Please write it down or talk to others about it and get one step closer to your goal.

You find out that you want to do something with Facebook by asking yourself these questions, but you don't know what yet. Force yourself to think about these questions and write them down; this will make you more concrete about what you want and why.

Select a target audience on Facebook.

Who is your target audience? Be specific; if everyone is your target audience, your Facebook Ad will not result in more traffic or leads.

Is your target group present on Facebook?

Facebook offers a handy tool for this, called "Audience statistics." This allows you to gain insight into the users of Facebook. In this way, you can determine whether your target audience is present and your target audience's interests to know what to target.

Facebook's audience statistics tool now shows you valuable data that you can use to gain more insight into your target audience's interests. With these interests, you can segment even better.

What is Facebook Pixel?

The Facebook Pixel is a piece of code that runs in the background of your website. This allows you to track visitors to your website. With this pixel, you can build a target group on Facebook based on your website's audience.

Got it?

This allows you to build particular campaigns that you only serve out to people who have visited your website. It is possible to select people who have been on a specific page of your site.

The Facebook Pixel does even more for you …

The base Pixel is installed on all pages. Also, there is the possibility to place event pixels. A purchase event is set as soon as a visitor has made a payment on your website. In this case, place the "Purchase Pixel" on the thank you page of your website. This allows you to exclude people from your campaign only to reach those who are not yet customers of yours. Also, you can use the Facebook insight tool to analyze your paying customers and find look-a-likes.

Tips for writing a Facebook Ad.

Building an ad is not that exciting; you now know how it works. Building an ad that converts (clicks on your ad to your target page) is more difficult.

Hence, a few more tips for building converting ads.

1. The first question to ask yourself: "Why should my audience click on the ad? What's in it for them? Have you thought about the problem you can solve for them with your ad?

2. "Buy now X" won't work if people don't know who you are and if your products are reliable. Would you click on such an ad yourself? To build it up. First, please tell us who you are and share your expertise so that you build trust.

3. It starts with solving problems for your customers.

4. Think about how you present yourself on Facebook. People like to do business with people. In that case, a business image can work against you. Who is behind brand X or Y, and what is their story?

5. Something that works really well is to share your results. Ask your existing customers to comment on how they have been treated and what they think of your product or service. This can help build confidence. Social probative value!

6. Be personal, address people from your person, and don't make it too formal. How do you post a message on Facebook yourself?

7. Use tracking codes to see in Google Analytics where your traffic is coming from. Tracking codes are part of your URL and ensure that you can measure your traffic. This way, you can see the most important traffic sources for conversion on your website afterward.

I hope this has given you a good idea of Facebook Marketing and how you can succeed in it. Good luck building your ad!
