The Most Thoughtful Gift From My Nephew
Sydney is much more than a city for healing hearts and rekindling relationships. Read this blog to find out how.

My nephew Tom and I share an extraordinary bond. When it comes to likes and dislikes, we share a lot of similarities. We were always there to support each other during the hardest days of our life. And this was one of the biggest factors that kept our bond strong. And the best part – Both of us love gifting and surprising others. Gifts are something we really hold close to our hearts. Be it from a relative, a friend, or even a stranger.
Tom and I also have a way of sorting out even the worst fights. And as a counselling psychologist, I recommend many of these to my patients who are trying to resolve conflicts. A fight between my sister and brother-in-law made things difficult for Tom and me. It all started with a simple difference of opinion and grew out of proportion even before they realised it.
Having a tough time finding the solution for your troubled relationship? Hope my story of how we sorted this conflict inspires you to find a solution!
Relive Memorable Moments
None of us is perfect. But, a simple act of making each other understand your feelings can be a great idea for two people undergoing relationship issues. A change of ambience can work wonders.
So one evening, Tom took us for a spectacular harbour cruise with dinner. The distant view of the luxury catamaran sparked a ray of hope in us. As we stepped inside, we noticed slight emotional changes in my sister and brother-in-law. For a moment, they exchanged looks like they had fallen for each other at first sight. Being in a love marriage, I remember my sister telling me how her husband proposed to her aboard a cruise on a romantic date. Tears filled their eyes as memories flashed through their minds like a tornado. Slowly, my brother-in-law held my sister’s hands to reassure her of his love for her.
Communicate Your Feelings
On seeing his parents holding hands, Tom and I went up to the deck for them to spend some time together. And what my sister shared with me after that night’s cruise overwhelmed me joyfully.
They had not spoken for nearly a year. The well-lit harbour and the boat’s interiors reminded them of the dinner dates of their courtship period. They confessed how much they have been longing to be together. Life had taken a rough turn. They couldn’t keep many of the promises made while they were in a relationship. Busy lives drew them apart. As a couple, they were no longer together when they needed each other the most. And this made them question their marriage. Tears rolled down their cheeks as they admitted their mistakes.
After a while, on noticing the silence growing louder, we stepped down from the deck. Tom cried before his parents, wanting them to be together. We had bought a chain with a heart-shaped locket engraved with a lovely photo of his parents. He made them wear the chain and gave them a tight hug.
A Personalised Gift
My sister and husband looked at each other with tears in their eyes. It felt like the two of them silently apologised to each other. At that very moment, it seemed as if the Sydney Harbour night cruise was a significant part of their relationship. They were eagerly waiting to start all over again. As they held their hands and gazed at the skies, they hugged each other warmly. And this was their way of telling each other, ‘I love you’.
A truly touching gift from a 20-year-old boy to his parents. And, of course, to me, his aunt, who wanted to see her sister happy and reunited with her better half.
So, what better gift can an aunt demand from her nephew? Can any parent ask for more from their son? If you have a relatable experience, please do pen down in the comments below.
