There has been a significant rise in the number of women in business over the past couple of years and for good reason. There are many reasons women make great business leaders, and it is essential to recognize the unique qualities and strengths that women bring to the table. Women are often highly collaborative and inclusive in their leadership style, adaptable and resilient in facing challenges, and have incredible communication skills.
As more women are recognized as influential leaders across many industries, the future is now more favorable for women in business. From breaking down gender barriers to creating new opportunities for success, the future is female.
The Rise of Women-Owned Enterprises
The number of female-led businesses has increased significantly over the past few years. According to a survey conducted by HR services company Gusto, 49% of new businesses were founded by women in 2021, up from 28% in 2019. The Census Bureau also reported that in 2020, over 20% of all businesses in the US were owned by women.
Due to the increasing number of women-owned businesses, the support they receive from various organizations has been instrumental in helping them overcome the multiple barriers that have kept them from being successful. Organizations like Women Entrepreneurs (WE) and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) provide resources and support for women entrepreneurs, helping them overcome the barriers that have historically held them back. Additionally, venture capitalists are beginning to recognize the potential of female-led startups, providing more funding opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
More Women in Leadership Roles
One of the most prominent trends in business involves the increasing number of women in leadership roles. Despite the challenges that they still face, there has been progress in the past couple of years. In 2021, 41 women were named as chief executive officers of Fortune 500 companies, a significant increase from the previous five years when only 21 female leaders were in such positions.
In addition to the business world, women are making significant progress in politics. As of now, there are more women than ever before running for office at the state, national, and local levels. This increase in representation allows them to influence policies and drive change.
Taking the Lead in Various Fields
Women are also more likely to be successful in leadership roles in fields such as environmentalism and sustainability due to the increasing number of women pursuing degrees in these subjects. Although women have historically been underrepresented in STEM fields, this stereotype changes as more women pursue degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. They use their expertise to address some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
Women play a significant role in the innovation ecosystem in other fields, like healthcare and social entrepreneurship. By having their unique perspectives, they can conceptualize new business models prioritizing the environment and social impact over profit, leading to numerous companies that have positively impacted the planet.
Overcoming Common Challenges
Despite the various achievements of women in the business world, many barriers still prevent them from being successful, such as access to funding. A report released by PitchBook revealed that only 2.3% of the capital invested in startups in 2020 was allocated to women-led businesses, highlighting the need for more support.
One of the most significant barriers women still face is the pay gap, a persistent issue that has persisted despite progress. This disparity is especially problematic for women of color, as systemic racism still affects them negatively.
Organizations need to create an inclusive and diverse workplace to address these issues. This can be done by establishing policies and procedures supporting diversity and inclusion.
The future is now truly female in the business world, as more women are starting and leading businesses, and there has been increased support for female entrepreneurship. Despite the progress that has been made, many challenges still need to be resolved to ensure that the future is positive and prosperous for everyone.
