The legal field has long been lauded by Hollywood, offering a glimpse of lavish and luxurious life. However, just because a job is exciting does not mean that it is the right fit for everyone. That is why you must do your research before you invest your time into becoming a lawyer.

Why Become a Lawyer?

Before you allow yourself to get carried away by the idea of starting a legal career, you need to know whether you have the right reasons for wanting to pursue it. Lawyers are in a unique position to help people at the worst points in their lives, help improve profitability for the largest companies in the world and even take on world leaders. The range of work a lawyer can accomplish varies greatly, and so does the earning potential. As you do your research, look into what field you would want to pursue, what is the average salary and if the lifestyle is right for you. This research will help you as you decide whether to continue on this path.

Get Your Feet Wet

Once you have completed your research, it would benefit you to start applying yourself in the field. This experience can include applying to be a paralegal, to get a feel for the corporate world, or you learn more about the ins and outs of the courtroom as one of the court reporters Phoenix. The legal world has a lot of different aspects. The more you understand about the system and how to work in it, the better off you will be as you continue down the road of becoming an attorney. While looking, keep in mind which legal career you want to follow to help you choose the best fitting job.

Choose a School

Now that you know you want a career in law, it is time to choose your school. Where you go to school can have a significant impact on your future. When considering locations, think about the alumnae network, the coursework available and the location. One of the most powerful tools a school has is its alumnae network. Schools count on this network to help their students break into top firms and other posts. Additionally, you want to note that the school offers the field of study you are interested in learning. Finally, if you are unable to get into your school of choice, pick a school in the geographical area you want. This way, you can create your network within that community.

Pick Your Internships

Every summer, most legal students take part in summer internships to gain broader perspectives and understanding of both individual firms and the law. This program allows students to also network within the firm and leverage that for a future position. Before you choose your program, you need to start earning the grades and applying for interviews. Top firms typically have pages of applicants from all areas of the country, and selecting candidates can be a grueling process. Make sure that you have your grades ready as well as any other experience, such as working for your school’s law review, will help you make your application stand out from the rest.

Sign With a Firm

As you enter your final year of law school, it is time to put your experience together to start applying and finally be accepted to your firm of choice. There are close to 50,000 law firms in the US this year, and choosing the right one for you can be a challenge. Start by looking at the top firms for your career path. Consider location, firm size, promotion opportunities and earning potential. By thinking about these factors, you can choose the spot that is right for you. Don’t forget you can also work for a company as an in-house counsel if you would rather the corporate environment.

Good luck with your studies as you enter this exciting field.
