These legends often depict Bigfoot as a powerful and elusive creature, sometimes considered a protector of the natural world. Early Reports: The modern interest in Bigfoot began in the late 19th century with the arrival of European settlers in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. There were reports of encounters with a creature described as a large, bipedal, and covered in hair. These accounts were often dismissed as myths or exaggerated stories. The "Wildman" Phenomenon: In the early 20th century, reports of encounters with a creature resembling Bigfoot increased. Newspapers published stories about "wildmen" or "ape-men" spotted in remote areas, especially in the Pacific Northwest. These reports fueled public fascination with the creature. Jerry Crew and the Patterson-Gimlin Film: One of the most significant events in Bigfoot history occurred in 1958 when a bulldozer operator named Jerry Crew discovered large footprints at a construction site in Bluff Creek, California.
