First came Dolly Parton, whose death on August 25 broke my heart in a way I had trouble putting into words. Then, yesterday, came the news that Wendell Berry had died at his home in Kentucky at the age of ninety-two. I sat with that news this morning and felt something I had already been carrying grow heavier. The Appalachian Mountains had lost two voices that had spoken to generations of us, and for me, those voices had been part of my life since childhood.
