The Importance of Networking and Mentorship in Angel Investing

By Uday YallapragadaPublished 2 years ago • 3 min read

Picture an entrepreneur in your head. In all likelihood, you’ve just pictured a business-savvy person with high interpersonal skills. Given how vital networking and mentorship are to their success, it’s common to assume that entrepreneurs are social beings.

This is especially true when it comes to finding funding, such as angel investors. An angel investor is a person willing to provide capital to a business (or individual) in exchange for ownership equity in the business planned.

In other words, it’s a great way for new businesses to raise money and get off the ground. Finding angel investors has many benefits, and likewise, there are many strategies for finding them. But again, it all comes back around to networking and mentorship.

Angel Investors and Innovation

Angel investors are unique in the world of business funding and investment. Unlike many other lenders, they provide money upfront, all in exchange for future stock/value in the company. This detail is critical, as it means they have a vested interest in the business’s success.

As such, angel investors frequently look for opportunities that align with their interests. Likewise, they’re more likely to take a risk on something compelling and innovative, which in turn helps drive innovation in countless industries.

The Center for Venture Research released a new study (2021) revealing that angel investors and their support have been steadily increasing. It nearly tripled in the previous decade, just to show how much industry growth there’s been.

Finding Angel Investors

At the end of the day, the best way to find angel investors is to get up and put yourself (and your business) out there. There are several ways to do this, most of which will rely on variations of networking methods.

One option is to create a strong online presence, such as a website and social media campaign. This can attract attention from interested investors while also building up excitement for the product or service you intend to offer.

Alternatively, one could choose a more traditional method of finding angel investors. That would be attending startup events, which is always an excellent way of finding investors. Typically, those interested in investing in a new business venture will help set up these events, so one merely has to be on the lookout for them.

Given the rise of the internet, there’s also the option to join an online angel investment network group. These groups help connect angel investors with potential business owners and vice versa.

Networking Tips

All entrepreneurs should know the basics of networking. Mastering these basic skills will get them far in any industry - beyond securing funding. Before you begin networking, take the time to establish your goals. This will help define what interactions to look for.

Next, it’s critical to remember that genuine connections and interactions will always mean more. Meeting thirty people at an event won’t do any good if each interaction feels robotic and hollow. Instead, aim to create human and sincere connections with potential investors/contacts.

It’s likewise important to remember that relationships are two-way streets—even professional relationships. A relationship where one person only ever takes will not last long. As such, be sure to provide value to your new contacts, such as sharing pertinent information or providing support.

Finally, networking goes beyond constantly making new connections. One must maintain the connections they create, or they will fade away. In other words, stay in touch with your network and connections. Doing so has many benefits, including increasing reputation and finding unique opportunities.

Mentorship

Often, entrepreneurs have much they can share with future generations. This is especially true when it comes to helping the next generation of entrepreneurs establish their reputations and create their own networks.

Mentorship can even be valuable when it comes to finding angel investors. It’s part of that mutual exchange. Entrepreneurs should not be afraid to seek out mentors when first diving into the world of angel investing. Those who have been there will have many tips and tricks they’ve built up over the years.
