Nar Phu Valley Trek Journal: Into Nepal’s Hidden Himalayan Kingdom
Next Short Journey to Valley Trek

There are treks that impress with famous viewpoints and crowded trails, and then there are journeys that quietly stay with you forever. The Nar Phu Valley Trek belongs to the second kind. Hidden behind the popular Annapurna region, this remote Himalayan adventure leads into two ancient valleys where stone villages, dramatic cliffs, monasteries, yak pastures, and high mountain passes create one of Nepal’s most rewarding trekking experiences.
Unlike busy trekking routes, Nar Phu feels untouched and peaceful. The trails are quieter, the landscapes more rugged, and the sense of discovery stronger each day. Here, life still moves with the seasons. Prayer flags wave above old chortens, herders guide yaks across alpine meadows, and centuries-old monasteries overlook the valleys. For trekkers seeking culture, solitude, and adventure, Nar Phu Valley is a remarkable destination.
The Journey Begins: Kathmandu to Koto
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu through river valleys, terraced hillsides, and mountain roads toward the Annapurna region. After reaching Besisahar, the road becomes rougher as the route continues deeper into the Himalayas. By the time you arrive in Koto, the air feels cooler, pine forests surround the village, and the excitement of trekking truly begins.
Koto is the gateway to Nar Phu Valley and the final stop before entering a more remote and traditional world.
Day 1: Trek from Koto to Meta
Crossing a suspension bridge and passing the permit checkpoint, the trail leaves the Annapurna Circuit and follows the Nar Khola upstream. This first trekking day is dramatic from the start. Narrow canyons rise overhead, waterfalls fall from dark cliffs, and forests slowly open into barren mountain slopes.
The climb is steady but rewarding. Meta appears on an open hillside with stone lodges facing giant mountain walls. The peaceful atmosphere and wide views make it a memorable first night in the valley.
Day 2: Trek from Meta to Phu Village
From Meta, the landscape becomes even more wild and remote. The trail crosses open plateaus, rocky paths, and small settlements where blue sheep are sometimes spotted on distant ridges. Vegetation becomes scarce, replaced by stone, wind, and sky.
As you approach Phu, dramatic cliffs surround the valley and ancient ruins appear above the trail. Phu Village is one of the greatest highlights of the trek. Built from stone beneath towering rock walls, it feels timeless. Narrow lanes wind between traditional homes, and prayer walls line the village entrance.
The culture, architecture, and daily life here reflect deep Tibetan influence preserved for generations.
Day 3: Acclimatization and Exploration in Phu
A rest day in Phu is important for altitude adjustment, but it is also a wonderful chance to explore the valley. Many trekkers visit Tashi Lhakhang Monastery, one of the most respected spiritual sites in the region.
Inside, butter lamps glow softly while monks chant prayers in quiet rooms. Outside, breathtaking views stretch across rugged ridges and snowy peaks.
You can also hike above the village for panoramic scenery, observe local farming terraces, or simply relax and experience the peaceful rhythm of mountain life.
Day 4: Trek from Phu to Nar Phedi
Leaving Phu, the route retraces part of the valley before turning toward Nar Phedi. The trail passes mani walls, streams, and grazing lands where yaks feed in the open landscape.
Nar Phedi is a small and peaceful settlement known for its monastery and simple lodges. Spending the night beside a monastery in such a remote setting is one of the most unique experiences of the journey.
Day 5: Trek from Nar Phedi to Nar Village
The trail climbs gradually to Nar, another beautiful high-altitude village surrounded by wide mountain scenery. Compared with Phu, Nar feels more open, with larger fields and broader views toward snow-covered peaks and rugged passes.
The village itself is rich in culture, with prayer flags, stone walls, and traditional homes built to survive harsh Himalayan winters.
An evening walk around Nar is highly recommended, especially when the setting sun turns the mountains golden.
Day 6: Crossing Kang La Pass to Ngawal
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. Starting early in the morning, the trail climbs steadily above Nar through yak pastures and rocky slopes toward Kang La Pass at over 5,300 meters.
The ascent requires patience and determination, but the reward is unforgettable. From the top, prayer flags flutter in the wind as spectacular views open across the Annapurna range. Snow peaks, glaciers, and deep valleys stretch in every direction.
After enjoying the summit views, the trail descends steeply toward Ngawal. Green fields and traditional villages signal a return to the main Annapurna route after days in a hidden mountain world.
Final Return
From Ngawal, trekkers usually continue toward Manang or return by road through Besisahar to Kathmandu, depending on their itinerary.
Although the trek eventually ends, the memories remain vivid: the silence of high valleys, the warmth of local hospitality, ancient monasteries, dramatic mountain passes, and the unforgettable beauty of Nar Phu.
