The list below includes all the diverse electronic music genres that can assist our students and listeners in navigating the many types of electronic music can take! This list also contains the BPM of the various EDM genres of music. This is the most comprehensive list on the web of all electronic music genres. To make it on the list of genres, they must be primarily electronic music genres, not genres of music based on bands and frequently played for DJs at clubs. 2-Step / Two-Step

The origins of the genre are UK Garage and Breakbeat. A typical 2-step drum pattern is syncopated kick drums that skip one beat with shuffling rhythms and the addition of triplets to other parts of the percussion. This is the case in particular, producing a sound distinctively different from House and Techno music.

4x4 / Niche / Bassline

The music is derived from UK Garage and Grime. It is characterized by a 4x4 beat influenced by UK Garage and Grime vocals with a heavy accent on a solid bassline.

8-Bit / Chiptune

The origins of Chiptune are in the early days of computer games and Pop. The genre is characterized by the experimental low-resolution and low-quality sounds typical of the first computer games, most notably the Gameboy and Game Boy 2, which are often utilized to create Chiptune performances. The music often has pop and emo-like tones.

Acid / Acid House / Acid Techno

The sound originates from Chicago House and Hi NRG. It is characterized by the modulated sound of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer, which is layered over a regular high-energy beat.

Afro House

The music is derived from House and traditional styles of African music. The genre is distinguished by soulful and house grooves, African vocals, and percussion. Afro House is an umbrella term encompassing various subgenres within popular African dance genres that have yet to be established as genres in the Western electronic dance music scene.

Afrobeat

The music is derived from Highlife, Fuji, Jazz, Soul & Funk, Soca and Dancehall music. It is distinguished by the intricate interlocking patterns and percussion found in West African music.

Amapiano / Gqom / Kwaito

A sub-genre that combines House music as well as Afro House that emerged in South Africa. It blends Afro-House, Deep House and Jazz and also incorporates African vocalists, percussions and rhythmic elements.

Ambient

It is a fusion of Classical, Lounge, Electronica, Minimal and Experimental music. Its atmospheric compositions and multi-layered textures distinguish it. It emphasizes soundscape over specific patterns and pays more focus on repetitive rhythms.

Balearic Beat

The genre's origins are Bossa Nova, Chillout, Electronica, Disco and Mediterranean music. The fusion genre emerged from DJs performing different genres in one set, often experimentally changing genres and BPM. Incorporating the influences of those early days, it's now characterized by a slack, atmospheric house beat and tribal percussion, which attempt to create a relaxing, spiritual state.

Baltimore / Bmore

It is derived from Hip-Hop, Garage House, Miami Bass, Breakbeat and House. The music is distinguished by a blend of hip-hop and stuttering, chopped house music that follows an 8/4 beat.

Bass House

The music is derived from House, UK Bass, Breaks, Riddim and Fidget House. The music is distinguished by its heavy basslines that jackin' grooves, massive distortion vocal chops, and fidget sound effects.

Bhangra

It is a fusion of Indian folk music from India. The music is distinguished by the Chaal rhythm, accompanied by modern electronic sounds as well as traditional Indian vocals and percussive elements.

Big Room House / EDM

The music is derived from Progressive House, Electro House, Trance and Hardstyle. Massive progressive builds and savage drops characterize it. This type of sound is typically heard at large festivals and concert venues, which is why it's called that.
