Kids are making more than you in 2020. Here's why.

What’s the first thing parents do these days to keep their kids quiet? Hand them a phone or iPad. (crazy time we live in amiright?)

One thing I’ve learned, Millenials are far from camera-shy in 2020. What’s the obsession with YouTube? What’s with watching people eat these days? Messy eating, clean eating, large amounts of food… seems gross?

Don’t knock it until you try it. These YouTube creators are making thousands, tens of thousands, and even millions of dollars just by recording themselves eating a meal and a lot of them haven’t even graduated high school.

Sounds simple, right? Break out your camera, sit down and eat. Sure, it is a simple concept, but these content creators are going through hours of filming, editing, posting and engaging with their viewers. It isn’t as it seems on the surface, as with anything, but it’s absolutely a way for you to make money in 2020.

What is a mukbang?

Mukbang’s originated in the 2010s as eating shows popular in the Korean community. The host will eat food on a broadcast or pre-recorded video and engage with their audience.Image for post

With today’s social media culture, millennials, content creators and influencers have adopted this avenue and turned it into a profitable business. Many of your favorite YouTubers are going viral eating seafood boils, honeycomb, pretty much anything that is visually satisfying and putting their own twist to it. Anyone can do it really, however, it is not that easy given the work and the competition. Your content and most importantly, your personality must carry you far. You will need to stand out and be relatable AF.

So what’s the tea?

How much can you make?

These kids are making so much money on YouTube. Forbes reported 2019 earnings from these kiddos just making videos. Check out these 2019 earnings:

Preston (25yrs old): $14 Million

Anastasia Radzinskaya (5yrs old): $18 million

Ryan Kaji (8yrs old): $26 million

The average YouTube channel can receive $3–5 per 1,000 views. Now, here’s what they don’t tell you: your channel doesn’t become monetized until you reach 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time. Once you’re monetized, there are so many other ways to keep the good money coming in on YouTube:

Money from Ads

Paid sponsorships

Affiliate marketing

& more!

There is so much information out there in regards to how much money you can make creating a platform on YouTube. You don’t become a millionaire right out the gate — let’s just be real here — but there have been success stories of it happening over 1 year. Like who? YouTube star Bloveslife has many many videos of her discussing her rise to fame. Don’t believe it? Do your own due diligence and just take a look at her channel. Examine the video performances and thumbnails at a glance, starting from her first few videos through the current. You can visually see the increase in view count, the way she dresses starts to change, her house tours changed from small houses to larger homes displaying the hard work she’s been putting in.

These videos are kid-friendly usually, which expands the market of viewers you can attract. According to a 2018 Pew Research Center study, 81% of parents with children 11 or younger let their kids watch YouTube.

Parents are starting to create mukbang channels with their children, which is a means for creating a living for themselves. Now, don’t get me wrong: I don’t believe in using your child and an opportunity for a check for your own personal gain. Personally, you may morally be the worst parent in my opinion if that is what you choose to do. But, it seems like some of these channels are genuinely doing what they love and creating real relationships in the mukbang community. It’s a real community!

Is it worth it?

Honestly? If you’re not camera-shy, why not? You’re literally just recording yourself enjoying your meal. You can choose to talk or not talk, incorporate topics you’d like to discuss or debate, eat sloppily or eat clean, repeat True Crime stories, whatever you want to do to create content, you can do it. Everyone has to eat right? There’s so much out there on YouTube and it is a great platform for opportunity and free money. With everything, you still must put in the work. Nothing easy is worth having; yes, this is less challenging than sales or affiliate marketing, but you still have. to. put. in. work.

Regardless, I’d love to be making money at home in front of my camera and computer. We’re canceling 9–5’s in 2020. Wouldn’t you?
