JIPMER can trace its origins to the ‘Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry’ established by the French Government in 1823

The college was located in the modified buildings of the High Court, which is now the Legislative Assembly Hall. In 1956, The Ambassador of France laid the foundation stone of the ‘new’ medical college that was located on the outskirts of Pondicherry town.

JIPMER is a residential medical institution with a campus sprawling over 195 acres. It has about 300 faculty, 700 resident physicians and over 800 nursing, administrative and support staff. Every year, it admits 150 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate students.

Campus

JIPMER campus sprawls over 195 acres in Gorimedu, Puducherry, hosting the medical college the old and new hospital blocks, the student and resident hostels, the staff quarters, a branch of a nationalized bank, two ATMs, a post office, a temple, playgrounds and sports fields. The campus boasts the large and spacious Dr APJ Abdul Kalam JIPMER Auditorium, while the library on campus aids students with all research needs.

While the hospital section of the campus is typically crowded and busy, the residential part of the campus is tranquil and dotted with small parks and statues.

JIPMER, Puducherry offers internships within their medical departments with stipends as well as placement opportunities to final year students.

2020 placement highlights: the median CTC for M.D. students placed was INR 11.62 LPA, while the median CTC offered to M.B.B.S. students was INR 11.14 LPA. Median CTC’s for 2020 were higher than those in 2019, where median CTC for M.D. and M.B.B.S. students was recorded at INR 10.20 LPA.

Admission procedure:

Candidates must first apply for admission by submitting the application form and paying the application fee online, available on the official JIPMER website.

After registering for NEET (generally in March) and appearing for the exam, candidates must register for NEET counselling and based on their NEET scores/ranks, select JIPMER, Puducherry as a choice in the counselling.

After being offered admission to JIPMER, candidates may confirm admission by the verification of documents and payment of fees.

Selection criteria: Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INI-CET) scores/ranks

Admission procedure:

Candidates must first apply for admission by submitting the application form and paying the application fee online, available on the official JIPMER website.

After registering for INI-CET and appearing for the exam, candidates will be offered admission based on the ranks secured in the INI-CET exam.

The second campus of JIPMER at Karaikal was started after a notification from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi to establish an off-site campus of JIPMER at Karaikal. The Government of Puducherry had transferred 41 acres of land at Kovilpattu, Karaikal for setting up the Academic Campus and Multi-Speciality Hospital; 38 acres of land at Kamaraj Salai for the Residential Campus; PWD buildings at Arasalar Complex and ANM College building at Kovilpattu to establish the interim Academic campus. The Government of Puducherry also provided MIG flats at Valatheru, Bharathiar Street, Karaikal on rent for establishing students hostel. The first MBBS batch of 50 students joined JIPMER, Karaikal in July 2016. Dr Kiran Bedi, the Honorable Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, and Shri V. Narayanaswamy, the Honorable Chief Minister of Pondicherry, inaugurated the Arasalar Campus of JIPMER Karaikal on 15th December 2016. The renovated Kalam complex was inaugurated on 29th March 2017. The 506-bedded General Hospital (GH) of Puducherry Govt., located at Karaikal has been adopted by JIPMER for clinical teaching and training of JIPMER, Karaikal students.
