Travel more, work less!

When it comes to working and travelling, many people believe that these two things don’t go together. However, the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Although it isn’t the easiest thing to do, it is possible that you can have a full-time career and travel regularly.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic may have halted any travel plans you may have had for 2020, there are some steps you should consider taking now if you want to start travelling more while working a full-time job.

Below, we have compiled a list of some of the best tips you can use to successfully travel frequently while working a full-time job.

Use your vacation days smartly

Most people believe that if they are able to push all of their holiday days together onto one or two-week segments they will be able to travel more while they work. However, while this might be good if you are planning a long family vacation, you won’t be able to see a multitude of places throughout the year.

Instead of saving days up for one big trip, you should try and take 1-2 vacation days at a time, and do it in such a way so that they link up to the weekend (e.g. taking Thursday and Friday off). This way, you can take multiple short breaks every year that will allow you to see more of the world.

Take 2-Day adventures

In the USA, there is no minimum amount of vacation days an employer has to give you. Therefore, your vacation days are likely to run out as the year goes on. When this happens, and you have to start working 5 days a week without the possibility of a longer break, you need to make the most of your weekend.

Weekends are short, so they are best for short-distance travel. Over the weekend, you want to spend as much time sight-seeing and not travelling from A to B, so try and make sure that you see places that are no further than 5 hours from where you live. Although you probably won’t be seeing any foreign countries during the weekends, it will give you a chance to explore more states in America.

Extend business trips

If you work for a company that requires you to travel a lot for business, make the most of them.

Business trips to different areas of the world are usually exhausting. Not only do you have to be up at a different time to what you’re used to, but you will rarely get a chance to explore the sites of the area you are in.

Since business trips are usually taken during the week, it is the perfect opportunity to extend into the weekend. To save money, take advantage of the flights already covered by your job. You will probably have to pay for an extra night or two at the hotel, but the perks are worth it.

Start working remotely

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, you may have found it difficult to get your boss’s approval to allow you to start working remotely. However, as a result of the pandemic, many companies have made the switch and are now encouraging workers to work from the comfort of their own home to stop the spread of the virus.

If you have started working remotely because of the virus, you may not have had the chance to travel far. However, although we do not know how long the pandemic will last, studies have suggested that remote working will be here to stay.

Working remotely will mean that you will be able to work from anywhere in the world as long as you are working your assigned hours. Make sure you speak to your boss before you plan any long vacations

Consider making a career switch

If you want to travel more but work at a role that doesn’t require you to take business trips or won’t let you work remotely, it may be worth considering a career switch, especially if you value travelling highly.

There are plenty of jobs that allow you to travel while you work, such as jobs within the travel industry itself, remote work, as well as many other jobs in a wide variety of sectors.

However, you need to be aware that travel-friendly jobs are hugely competitive, so you need to make sure that your application stands out from the crowd. Make sure that you use a CV template and a cover letter template to make sure that your application will be noticed by recruiters.

Take evening flights

Once you have managed to book some time off work, consider booking flights that allow you to leave the country/state as soon as you have finished work. Evening flights can be a great way to make sure that you make the most of your vacation. However, these type of flights are not for everyone, and so you should only book late-night flights if you know you can hack it! Otherwise, you will be too tired to enjoy your trip and will be exhausted when you return to work.

Choose some vacation-worthy destinations and plan

If you aren’t tied to a specific location because of work, make the most of the time you have been able to take off.

If you have a significant amount of time off, go to a location that excites you. Even if you just have the weekend off, do your research and pick a place that you are genuinely excited to see. Once you have picked the perfect destination, start doing your research. Pick out the most important places you want to see, and write a list. Next, work out how and when you are going to see these places. If you are going somewhere that requires a lot of traveling to get to different sites, make sure you sort out renting a car our buying travel passes.

Conclusion

Travelling a lot when you have a full-time job is not the easiest task, but it certainly is possible!
