Galle Sri Lanka

One of the most popular routes in Sri Lanka is the journey from Colombo to Galle. The distance between the two cities is about 120-145 km, and the journey can take anywhere between 1.5-3 hours depending on the mode of transport you choose. So, whether you’re a backpacker on a tight budget or a tourist looking for a scenic experience, there’s a mode of transport for you. Here’s a guide on the best mode of transport you can use when traveling from Colombo to Galle.

Train Travel: Scenic and Budget-Friendly

One of the most popular ways to get to Galle from Colombo is by train. This is especially true if you want to enjoy the beauty of the coastline in Sri Lanka. The train ride goes right along the Indian Ocean.

The ride usually takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. This is a very efficient way to get to Galle. The price varies depending on the class you want to ride in, but the second-class tickets are very reasonable. This makes it one of the cheapest modes of transport.

The train starts from Colombo Fort Railway Station and ends at Galle Railway Station, both of which are close to the city centres. However, the train can be crowded, especially during peak hours. It is recommended to take the train in the morning. This is arguably the best mode of transport for those who want to save money and experience the beauty of the journey.

Private Car or Self-Drive: Flexibility on the Road

Another option would be to rent a car or hire a driver for the trip. This way, you would have complete control over your time and would also get to visit some off-the-beaten-path destinations on the way.

The fastest way to get to the destination would be to take the Southern Expressway route. However, if you want to enjoy the view on the way, you should opt for the A2 route. This is especially a good option if you have booked a luxurious stay at one of the best villas in Sri Lanka in Galle, such as the elegant IF Villa Thalpe.

However, driving in Sri Lanka can also be a problem because of the traffic conditions. That is why hiring a driver would be a good option.

Bus Travel: Cheap and Frequent

Another popular mode of transportation that is easily accessible and affordable is buses. There are two types of buses that operate on this route: coastal buses and expressway buses. Local buses are available at very short intervals, usually every 15 to 30 minutes.

These buses operate on the coastal road, providing a similar view to that offered by the train. These are extremely affordable. However, they may be crowded and less comfortable, especially if you have to carry luggage. A slightly more comfortable alternative is offered by the air-conditioned buses at a slightly higher fare.

For those who want to save time, expressway buses may be a better choice. These buses will take the Southern Expressway route to Galle, getting there in as little as 1.5 hours. They usually start from Makumbura (Multimodal Transport Centre), which is close to the city of Colombo.

Taxi or Private Transfer: Comfort and Convenience

If comfort and convenience are your primary concerns, taking a taxi or transfer is the best option. This is because you would not have to face any hassle in reaching the destination.

The time it would take to reach the destination would vary between 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the traffic and the route you take. You can also opt to travel by the Southern Expressway. This would be the costliest option to travel, but it would also give you the advantage of visiting any place on the way to the beach. This would also be a good option if you are traveling in a group.

Taxi fares may vary depending on the provider and type of vehicle, but ride-hailing apps such as Uber or PickMe offer relatively competitive pricing compared to other taxis. For those who prioritise convenience over price, this is the most stress-free mode of transportation.
