How To Get More Clients And Earn More Money On Upwork! (Anyone Can Do)

I can imagine how frustrating this must be for you. The good news is that there are usually precise explanations for why a person isn't succeeding on Upwork, as well as precise actions you can do to change it and start succeeding.

I'm going to presume that you want to start getting employment as soon and easily as feasible before I explain them.

You can invest a lot of time and effort into making the "ideal" profile, counting the words in your proposals, developing new talents, and more, but that won't get you hired any faster.

It's also not the simplest.

Successful real estate salesmen are aware of this. They concentrate most of their efforts on making the ENTRYWAY to the property look as lovely as possible rather than trying to make the entire house look perfect before they sell it.

They are aware that as long as a customer has a positive initial impression of the house, they will overlook minor flaws once they are inside.

This is the same. You can heed every piece of "professional" counsel, which is typically to "do everything! "— or you can concentrate on a small number of activities that will yield benefits as soon as feasible.

I'll demonstrate a method that is quicker and simpler.

1. Correct your title.

Recall how I said the top real estate professionals concentrate on the neighborhood surrounding the house's front entrance.

Consider your Title as your profile's "entryway."

It doesn't have to be perfect, but if it's a mess, it may easily kill the sale. When your title tries to be too many things at once, it is the biggest warning sign. For instance:

No one wants to hire a lawyer who also does data entry, app development, and house cleaning on the side. Would you want to hire that person?

So at the very least, your Title needs to be focused.

You can also try shining it up a bit. For example, anyone can add the word “Professional” to their Title. It takes 30 seconds and it makes you sound 10x more impressive.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, at least not right away.

You can always return to it after landing jobs and earning money. When that happens, it will be wise to devote more time and effort to it.

2. Retouch your image

Would you employ someone who appeared unqualified and unlikeable? Not.

And yet, your Upwork profile photo frequently conveys EXACTLY that idea. This is bad!

See the test I conducted using two nearly identical images of myself below:

Although it may seem superficial, it is a scientific reality that even seemingly insignificant adjustments to your appearance can have a significant impact on whether clients choose you or pass you by.

The good news is that, in my opinion, ANYONE can make oneself appear more powerful, knowledgeable, and likable JUST by shooting the appropriate photo.

Here are a few brief pointers:

  • Take your picture outside in a location with lots of natural light.
  • Do it on a gloomy day to avoid excessive sunlight and avoid seeming "washed out."
  • Smiling will make you seem friendlier, which will make customers like you more.

You can test your photos on Photofeeler.com (where I got the samples above) once you've taken a few nice ones. It's among the simplest ways to determine for sure whether your photo is luring customers in or driving them away.

3. Streamline your proposals.

Recently, I paid a freelancer $200 per case study to write them for me. Even if you paid me a million dollars, I couldn't recite even one sentence of her resume.

However, I can almost accurately recite what her proposition said.

People always focus their attention on the first thing they see.

Clients won't be concerned about what your profile says or doesn't say if your proposals are strong.

Even the strongest profile won't get you employed if your proposals aren't strong.

Therefore, taking the time to polish your proposals is worthwhile.

Simply sharing your knowledge with the client is the quickest, simplest way to make a fantastic proposal.

Giving them a practical hint or targeted piece of advice demonstrates to them your expertise and your concern for their interests. The most effective action you can do to start working on Upwork as soon as possible is this.

Here is an illustration from a proposal I just yesterday wrote:

This request received a response in under a minute.

Avoiding certain terms that, while common, can easily spoil an otherwise decent proposal is another fantastic strategy to improve your proposals by 10x faster.

Here are a few instances I encounter every day:

  • "I have a passion for..."
  • Please feel free to look over my portfolio.
  • "I'm driven, innovative, organized, committed, or another adjective."

4. Fix your evidence.

You must demonstrate your abilities to clients if you want to fast begin receiving Upwork jobs.

Their job, not just any work.

Showing them concrete evidence is the best way to accomplish this. In that manner, hiring you is a no-brainer for them.

If not, all you're doing is promising them you can do it, which is much less persuasive.

Do you recall the writer I commissioned the other day to prepare case studies for me? She not only created a fantastic proposal, but she also provided me with a sample of an article that was quite comparable to what I had requested.

Although it wasn't exactly the same, it was near enough that I didn't have to worry about whether she would be able to produce the kind of case studies I require.

It expedited and made my decision simple.

This means that she swiftly and easily obtained an Upwork position, which is exactly what I'm attempting to assist you with.

That's all well and good, Danny, but what if I don't have any examples of my work that are comparable to what a client is looking for?

Create one!

Please do not mistake the Crystal Ball Technique for offering clients free work; that is NOT what I am advocating. (You should never, ever work for free; doing so will result in your Upwork account being suspended.)

What I DO advocate is producing samples of work that are incredibly pertinent to and comparable to what actual Upwork customers actually need and are prepared to pay for.

By doing so, you'll be able to demonstrate your competence and make it simple for them to hire you right away.

Yet another thing...

The best location to locate fresh work after completing one Upwork project is from the same client.

Why not start your job search there because they already like and trust you (you claimed they gave you a 5-star review)?

Send them a quick message with a list of a few different ways you can assist them in growing their business.

Don't be pushy or sales; if you do it well, they will value your suggestions and the fact that you are considering how to assist in their development.

A Brief Recap

You don't need to "do everything," build the "ideal" profile, etc. to start landing assignments on Upwork rapidly.

Just a few activities will yield the quickest effects, so concentrate on them. These consist of:

  • Adjusting your title. Don't be the "Virtual Assistant/Designer/Spreadsheet expert/Photo retoucher" person; keep it focused.
  • Enhancing your photograph. Make sure your photo is drawing in customers rather than turning them away by taking a quality shot and uploading it to Photofeeler.com.
  • Make your suggestions better. Avoid using terms that may destroy your proposal, such as "Feel free to check out my portfolio." Clients will adore you if you concentrate on making them successful.
  • Correct your proof. Show clients a sample of your related work to demonstrate to them that you can complete their task. You can make some if you don't already have any.
  • The ideal location to hunt for new work if you've already completed projects on Upwork is among your past customers who already respect and like you.
