There are many ways to sell a product or service, and one of the best is to secure prospects and customer referrals.

The power of referrals can never be underestimated. People, especially these days, will only buy products or use services that have been recommended to them by people they know. But in most cases, this is not an option for the business owner, he has to do the next best thing which is to get testimonials from his past clients.

Testimonials are live statements from former customers or clients stating that they were satisfied with the product/service. Every business needs to have testimonials to stand out in the ever-crowded marketplace.

There are many benefits of having testimonials. Here are some of them.

Testimonials appeal to the target market

Testimonials tend to make your target market less suspicious. There are many scammers and scammers these days and this has made the market scary. Credible testimonials give reassurance to people looking out for a product or service. Providing testimonials gives people a much calmer approach to a product or service.

Testimonials guarantee quality

In addition to confirming the existence of a company and removing doubt, testimonials assure potential customers of the quality of a product or service. The fact that they took the time to write a testimonial about a product reflects their satisfaction with the product/service.

Testimonials give you an edge

Credible testimonials give your product/service an edge over your competitors. There are many products and services out there, and one way to stand out from the rest is to use credible testimonials.

There are several types of testimonials. Testimonials are usually classified according to their source. Here are some examples:

(a) Testimonials from satisfied customers.

An effective testimonial is likely to be something like this. Customer testimonials are crucial because they give a snapshot of what a product/service is like.

b) Testimonials from experts

Experts can be a reliable source of references. If a well-known dermatologist writes a testimonial about a cosmetic soap, it will surely help increase its sales, right?

c) Testimonials from celebrities

In a world driven by mass media, celebrities have become a powerful source of testimonials. These days, even advertisements are full of celebrity endorsements.

People may think that getting a celebrity endorsement from a celebrity pays a lot, but if it is a real endorsement, celebrities may even give up their talent.

For testimonials to become an effective marketing tool, collecting them is not enough. A good testimonial is one that can be compressed into a few short words. "I lost 20 pounds in two weeks!" is an example of an attention-grabbing testimonial. However, never rephrase or change what the client says. How to get the right testimonial will be discussed later.

Credible testimonials should also include the full characteristics of the people who gave them. If possible, include their job titles, location, and age.

Visual appeal is also very helpful when using references. If clients agree, ask for photos or videos for these references.

So how can a business owner get started with the whole reference thing?

Here are some steps on how to archive references.

1. before anything else, only products/services of exceptional quality deserve references, so make sure his/her product/service is of exceptional quality.

2. one must be able to convey his/her need to his/her customers to get their testimonials. If they are really satisfied with the product/service, they will be more than willing to participate.

3. interview your customers. Ask them what they like about your product/service, why they chose your product, and other such questions.

4. ask them if they are willing to provide written testimonials. You can offer to draft the testimonial yourself based on their answers during the interview, but the testimonial is still for their approval. You can make the wording memorable and get them to approve the references.

5. ask them if you could record the references with a tape recorder or video camera. Video recording is better, but of course, many people are camera-shy and this may be a limited option for most.

6) Choose the best references. Use the best ones to maximize the benefits your product can get from testimonials.

Testimonials are very powerful and that is why every company should have them. They provide reassurance and security and reflect the true nature of your product or service.
