California Driver License

Your driver's license status may be unclear in a variety of situations. If you recently received a citation or were arrested for some reason, your license status may have been altered. Another reason you might want to know if your license has been reinstated is if you have just completed your license suspension term. In either instance, it's critical to check your license's status because driving with a suspended license is a serious infraction that can result in jail time or a large fine.

There are a few options for finding out the status of your driver's license. We'll walk you through how to check the status of your California driver's license step by step in this article.

How long does it take for your driver's license to arrive in the mail in California?

You can track your California driver’s license on the DPS website. To track the status of your license, please wait 72 hours after payment.

Within 3-4 weeks, you will receive your new driver's license in the mail. If you haven't gotten your new driver's license after 60 days, contact the DMV at 1-800-777-0133.

Why would you want to know if your license has been suspended?

You were arrested or issued a ticket and are concerned about your driving rights, or you have completed a license suspension and want to ensure that your driving rights have been reinstated.

Ways to track your California DL

There are three ways to determine whether your California driver's license is valid or suspended.

There is a charge for each method. The cost varies between $2 and $5.

Virtual Verification

The simplest method is to check the status of your driver's license online. Simply go to the DMV website and navigate to the driver record request page. The page will provide you with pertinent information regarding the status of your driver's license. It is not considered an official document, though, unless you need to show it for some official purpose.

You must complete the following in order to use the information as an official document:

Create an account on the DMV website and fill out your current personal information.

After you've made your account, you'll have to pay a small fee to view and print the driver's record.

Visit the DMV in California

You can also go to your local California DMV office and get a printout of your driver's license information. To do so, you'll need to complete the following:

Fill out the INF 1125 form, which requires your personal information, as well as your driver's license number and date of birth.

  • Receive the official record for a little fee
  • Request a Driver's License by Mail

You can also send a request form to the California DMV headquarters to verify the status of your driver's license. To do so, you'll need to:

Fill out the INF 1125 form, which requires personal information, a driver's license number, and your date of birth.

Send the form, together with a fee, to the California DMV office.

The $5 charge must be mailed with the letter.

The driver's record will be mailed to you after that.

What information is stored in the file?

Starting March 20, 2019, the following information will appear on California driver's records:

  • your address,
  • serious convictions for 3, 7 or 10 years,
  • DMV actions against the license,
  • required by California Vehicle Code 1808 VC, vehicle accidents on the driver’s record.

With a driver's record request, you used to get a lot more information. Previously, you were given information that the DMV used internally. This information is no longer available.

How long does it take for DL to arrive?

Within two to four weeks, you should receive your new DL card in the mail. If your DL card has not arrived after 60 days, call 1-800-777-0133 to inquire about its status.
