Hiring an employee at a PR firm is never going to be as easy as just simply hiring an employee that would work in retail. However, there are certain things that you can look for that will help you find a great PR employee for your firm. The more you prepare to bring a new employee onto your team, the better chance you will have at a successful hiring process, which is a win-win situation for both you and the employee.

Look at your candidate's previous work experience and education.

It is important in PR that you hire employees who have the training and skills that it will take to succeed in your industry. Without the proper training or previous work experience, it can be difficult for your employees to jump on board and keep your business moving forward. Marketing, design, PR, and communications degrees are all great educational indicators of an employee’s potential success at your firm.

You have to hire an employee who is going to fit into your team.

The interview process is very important when you are hiring an employee. You will need to find an employee that is able to vibe with you. As the leader of your team, you need to make sure that you are getting along with the people you are working with. If you feel like there might be some discrepancy between you and your potential employees during the interview process, it is a good idea to move on to someone else who might be a better fit within your team.

What skills does this potential employee have?

There are certain skills that are going to be essential to being a great PR employee. Taking a deep look at your potential employee’s resume will help you determine if they have any of these skills. Communication skills, marketing skills, writing skills, and public speaking skills are just a few of the many different skills that are needed in order to succeed at a firm. In our modern digital age, your potential employee might even have a small website that will showcase their skills with a portfolio of their previous work.

Make sure you focus on effective onboarding once you have hired your employee.

Onboarding is something that is becoming very essential in the modern day hiring process. Try finding an effective onboarding guide that can most effectively make your new employee feel like they are part of your team. One of the biggest mistakes with onboarding is that employers may feel like they only have to run through a checklist once and everything will be fine. However, you need to continually make your new employee feel as though they are welcomed on your team. You may also have to help them understand the basics, along with the details of how things are done at your company. The more you apply an effective onboarding program, the better of a fit your new employee will be at your firm.

Find a personality type that is going to go above and beyond.

You want to look for an employee that is willing to go above and beyond for your firm. Look at the previous achievements that your potential employee has accomplished. If they are the type of person that is willing to come in early and stay late, you are going to have a member of your team that invaluable.

PR employees must be able to understand new technology and social media.

Social media and the latest technologies are essential to running an effective PR firm. You must make sure that your new employee is up to date on all of the latest social media platforms. This will give your firm a much better chance of succeeding when all of your employees are great at using different social media platforms.

Hiring good PR employees is a skill that you can learn over time. Creating a great team of PR professionals can turn into a passion that keeps you going through interview after interview. Remember, you need to be patient when you are looking for a new PR employee. When you have patience, you will be able to shuffle through the candidates until you find one that is just right for your firm.
