Germany Didn't Give Me a Job Yet - But It Gave Me Something Else
If you had met me a few years ago, discipline is probably not a word you would have used to describe me.
If you had met me a few years ago, discipline is probably not a word you would have used to describe me.
I was ambitious, hardworking, and full of plans - but consistent? Not really.
Like many people, I struggled with discipline for most of my life. I would start routines with excitement, stay motivated for a few days, and then slowly fall out of them. Sometimes it was because of my mood. Sometimes because life became uncomfortable. Sometimes simply because I didn't "feel like it" anymore.
And honestly, I used to think discipline was something people were naturally born with.
Some people just had that mindset, and others didn't.
But living in Germany changed something in me.
Not overnight. Not in a motivational, life-changing movie kind of way.
Slowly.
Quietly.
Painfully, at times.
Over the last 1.5 years, life here has forced me into routines I never thought I could maintain. I wake up at almost the same time every day now, whether I feel motivated or not. Whether I slept well or not. Whether I am hopeful about the future or mentally exhausted from another rejection email.
And some days are really hard.
There are mornings when I open my laptop already knowing the outcome before applying. Days when I feel emotionally drained scrolling through job portals again and again, tailoring applications again and again, introducing myself again and again.
There are moments when fear genuinely creeps in.
What if I never get the career I worked so hard for?
What if I remain stuck in this phase forever?
What if all this effort still changes nothing?
But something unexpected happened during this process.
Even on those difficult days, I still sit down and apply.
Not because I always feel positive.
Not because I suddenly became mentally strong all the time.
But because discipline slowly took over where motivation disappeared.
And to be honest, that feels surprisingly comforting.
Because when the emotional wave passes and my mind becomes calm again, I feel proud that I didn't quit on myself during a temporary low moment.
That feeling is new for me.
Earlier in life, whenever I broke consistency, I carried guilt afterward. I would overthink everything:
"If only I had stayed consistent…"
"If only I had pushed harder…"
"If only I hadn't wasted those few days…"
But discipline removes a lot of that mental noise.
Now, even if things are not working out yet, I know I showed up for myself. I know I tried. I know I stayed consistent even when nobody was watching and even when results were invisible.
And strangely, that gives peace.
Of course, I still have bad days. I still feel frustrated sometimes. I still question my future.
I'm human.
But discipline has become the one thing that keeps me moving even when emotions try to stop me.
Before moving abroad, I thought discipline came from inspiration.
Now I think it comes from repetition.
From continuing despite discomfort.
From showing up on ordinary days.
From doing small things consistently, especially when life feels uncertain.
Living in Germany didn't magically solve my problems. It didn't suddenly make life easy. In many ways, this phase has challenged me emotionally more than any other period of my life.
But it did teach me one thing I may never have learned otherwise:
Discipline is not about becoming perfect.
It is about becoming dependable for yourself.
And based on my own experience, I genuinely believe this:
A disciplined life may not guarantee success immediately, but it protects you from regret.
That alone changes something deeply within a person.
So if you are someone struggling to stay consistent in life, don't wait for the "perfect mindset" to arrive.
Start small.
Start imperfectly.
Start tired if you have to.
Because discipline is rarely built during our best days.
It is built during the days we least feel like trying.
