The trend of freelance jobs has become more prevalent in recent years, and the post-pandemic business world has restructured itself and adopted freelancers as a significant workforce. As a result, many companies and businesses hire freelancers like content writers, dewelopers, writing and translation specialists etc. from managers to regular employees.

Such flexibility allows freelancers to work from any point in the world or travel within their own country without job boundaries. The target market remains online, which places the question of where to work to the expert himself.

The pool of options for freelancers` houses divides into two sections: large cities and small towns. Which one is the best option? Let’s find out.

Being a freelancer in a large city

A big city provides countless opportunities for an expert with any skill level. One of the significant benefits of a big city for a freelancer is a solid opportunity for networking. Any kind of talent may find a niche in a big city and find their respective teams. There are agencies dedicated to composing talent-matching teams from the global talent pool for a particular company or a business.

Besides, big cities provide access to a broader pool of specialties:

  • IT industry.
  • Start-up enterprises.
  • Art.
  • Education.
  • Small businesses.

If a freelancer plans to implement their project, a big city can provide numerous opportunities.

Besides, working and living in a big city is a reward. Megapolises accumulate a lot of money, and people, want to spend this money. Therefore, big-city freelancers can attend cultural events, meet new people, and dedicate their time productively to work and leisure. Yet, big cities have their set of disadvantages too.

The first and foremost challenge of being a freelancer in a big city is prices. Starting with the rent and ending with commodities takes a lot of resources. Even without the costs of transportation, living in a big city may consume a lot of money. Therefore, a freelancer must work twice as hard as a regular office worker to maintain a modest city lifestyle.

A broad job market provides both opportunities and challenges. An expert can indeed find their place in any industry. However, the competition is fierce. If a freelancer has a resume with little experience, then it would be complicated to compete with other professionals.

In combination, these factors create a considerable amount of stress that has a negative impact on one’s mental and physical health. Being a freelancer in a big city is a significant gamble, which is also why many freelancers move to small towns.

Freelance job in a small town:

Small towns answer all the issues that megapolises my present. Living costs in small towns are much smaller than in big cities. Therefore, even an average salary of a freelance job can provide enough funds for a comfortable living.

Besides, small towns are less competitive environments than big cities. Any achievements and work experience matter when you try to be a freelancer in a small town. Besides, you may use transferable skills if you want to find a freelance job in another industry field.

Small towns are suited for family people also. Small towns may provide comfort and stability for big families, including infrastructure and the environment. If an expert wants to spend more time with their relatives than on the job, a small town would be a perfect choice.

At the same time, small cities mirror the pros of megalopolises when it comes to disadvantages. Low competence means fewer opportunities, and it would be harder to start in a small town as a freelancer. Besides, you may not find a remote position that fits your desires and expectations.

Small towns may be silent. People use opportunities to visit big cities for cultural events or any meaningful activity. Even if you find a suitable position, it would be hard to realize your potential to its fullest or enjoy the fruits of your labor. In the end, the internet connection in small towns may be awfully slow.

What to choose?

There is no right or wrong choice between a small town or a big city for a freelancer. The answer depends on expectations and set goals. For novice freelancers and people who want to shift from regular schedules to freelance, a big city will be a more favorable option. They may find an opportunity to participate in a professional team and show their talent or find a perfect customer, giving the best order possible. Of course, risks and disadvantages are still present, but the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.

Small towns, on the other hand, fit more for freelancers who are ready to settle down—the professionals who generated enough value and proficiency to have clarity about their income and possibilities. Then, a small town may become a perfect place for recreation and planning.
