When an employer demands you to pay to submit a job application or to be invited for a job interview, you may assume you’re dealing with recruitment fraud. Most of the time, that is the case. Unfortunately, a group of legitimate employers asks for payment to be considered for a job interview. You may consider paying or have already done so in the past. As job seekers continue to participate in these shady recruitment practices of employers, other job seekers are feeling the consequences of it. That is why we are here to give you four reasons why you should not pay for a job interview.

1. The employer also benefits from the job interview

A job interview is not only an opportunity for job seekers, but also for employers. As you benefit from everything, the job can bring you in your personal life and careerwise, the employer also benefits from it. Therefore, there is no reason for them to ask you for payment as they also benefit from job seekers applying. Besides that, the company has a budget for new employees, which is why they are looking for new hires. This means that the money that you would pay for a job interview will not be going towards their future employee and their salary, benefits, etc. but straight to their pockets.

2. Everyone deserves a fair chance

When an employer asks job seekers to pay to be considered for a job, they aren’t an equal-opportunity employer. Because they only offer you a chance if you are willing and able to pay the application fee. We all know that in this economic climate, not every job seeker can pay an application fee. This way, the less fortunate are being punished and discriminated against simply because of their financial status. But it's also not fair to jobseekers who are able to pay the application fees. Yes, they can afford it, but it isn't fair for them to have to pay their way into a job interview.

3. It is not worth it

Even if you’re in the financial position to pay to be considered for a job interview, it's not worth it. And contrary to popular belief, it's also not a guarantee that you will get the job. Payment does also not guarantee that the rest of the recruitment process will be fair. How would this be possible if the beginning of it all is anything but fair? Besides that, plenty of employers would welcome you with open arms without you having to pay a dime. Therefore, it’s best to keep your money in your pocket and look for a job opportunity at an employer that will invite you to a job interview based on your skills instead of your willingness to pay.

4. Not an honest workplace

If the recruitment process isn’t fair, how can you rely on anything else that the company does to be fair? You can’t. As we all know, shady business practices lead to shady work environments. And by paying your way into the company, you’re contributing to keeping these toxic work environments alive. And is that a place where you would want to work and build your career? We know we wouldn’t want to be a part of it.

At the end of the day, it is your choice whether you pay to be considered for a job. We suggest you don’t give in to these employers and only apply where an application is free of charge. This way, recruitment stays fair to all job seekers, and employers can’t abuse their position. The choice is yours!
