FLORIDA TRAVEL REPORT

During the Easter holidays, we made a 10-day tour through the state of Florida. On this page, you can find an overview of our full travel report. During the preparation of our trip through Florida, I gratefully made use of other blogs and travel reports. Because we have found a lot of valuable information ourselves thanks to the tips of other American travelers, we now also share our own experiences on this site.

We hope this is of some use to you and we wish you a great Florida vacation!

Lots of reading and viewing pleasure!

DAY 1 DUSSELDORF – MIAMI

We left Dusseldorf because we had found the cheapest flight to Miami with Air Berlin. We flew (April 2017) directly from Dusseldorf to Miami for 430 Euro per person. A few months ago we also flew to Denver via this airport, because Air Berlin also had the cheapest flights then.

DAY 2 FORT LAUDERDALE – COCOA BEACH

After a good night's sleep, we woke up early today. Our biological clock was just a little bit set to Belgium. Even before sunrise, I went for a walk through the garden of the hotel, where the beautiful swimming pool was also located. After a hearty breakfast next to the pool, we left for Cocoa Beach. Along the way, we visited some places of interest.

DAY 3 - KENNEDY SPACE CENTER

Today we woke up early again. The clouds from last night had cleared and the sun, which had risen in the meantime, was already shining on the colored walls of the hotel. The pool was still deserted, but there was already a lot of movement in the breakfast room.

After breakfast, we immediately left for our next destination: the Kennedy Space Center

DAY 4 - DISNEY WORLD ORLANDO

Yesterday we visited the Kennedy Space Center, today there is another park on the program. After a night at the Grande Villas Resort By Diamond Resorts, we were ready for a day of magic. From the resort where we stayed, it was about a 15-minute drive to the parking lot of the Magic Kingdom Park, Walt Disney World.

DAY 5 - SANIBEL ISLAND

We woke up a little later today than the past few days. The sun was already shining when we did our shopping for breakfast in the shop of the resort. After breakfast, there was a drive of about 3 hours and 30 minutes to Sanibel Island on the program.

They sometimes call this island the 'shell island' because you can find a huge variety of shells on the beaches of this island in Florida.

DAY 6 - EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK

Today our alarm went off extra early. My daughter and I decided to go for a walk on the beach before sunrise. We hoped this way maybe we could score some nice shells on the beach.

Without waking the rest of the family we snuck outside and drove over a deserted Periwinkle Way to the Lighthouse Beach Parking Lot.

After our morning walk on the beach and a hearty breakfast, we left for our next destination. A very nice one by the way. We were going to sail through the Everglades in an airboat!

I did a lot of research while preparing for our road trip through Florida. When I came across the Down South Air website I immediately knew that this was the location where we would make a trip through the Everglades.

DAY 7 - FLAMINGO VISITOR CENTER

Today our day started with a bit of rain, but luckily the weather forecast looked good. The sun would shine again in a few hours. After breakfast, we loaded our bags and set off for the Everglades National Park. On our second day in this park, we would drive up to the Flamingo Visitor Center and visit some places of interest along the way.

DAG 8 - KEY LARGO

The sun had only just risen when I took a walk on the balcony of our floor. From here I had a great view of the area. A nice breeze, the smell of the ocean, a pack of pelicans flying over your head… There are worse ways to wake up.

Today we went to do something that has been on our bucket list for years. Swimming with dolphins!

DAY 9 – KEY WEST

After breakfast, we decided to take a look at the beach at our hotel. Yesterday we didn't have time for this and today too it would, unfortunately, be limited to a short visit. A day of lazing in a hammock under the palm trees is of course also quite OK, but then we wouldn't have time to discover Key West.

DAG 10 - KEY LARGO

Waking up with a view of the water is not something we do every day. It was therefore enjoyable when we sat at the breakfast table in our apartment. As you can see in the photos, the whole resort has a 60s look and that had its charm. When all guests would come with an old-timer, you would imagine yourself completely in 'the golden years.

After breakfast, we went to see if the manatee could be seen, but apparently, it was swimming around.

In the afternoon we would visit the John Pennekamp Coral Reef, State Park. There you can visit beautiful coral reefs.

DAY 11 – MIAMI – DUSSELDORF

It is unbelievable how quickly these 10 days flew by! 10 days is way too little to explore Florida, but we still managed to enjoy it. On our way to the Miami airport, we stopped at the Biscayne National Park.
