We all dream of being able to sit on that sofa, drink in hand, watching the world go by without worrying about money, or going to work the next day because you work from home or have a passive income. Well, the dream is not as far-fetched as you may think and while reaching the point of being able to quit your day job would take a lot of hard work and patience, earning a passive income to help with the bills is achievable by just about anyone.

Below are five tips to earning an income online... Let's begin.

1. Amazon FBA

FBA stands for fulfillment by Amazon, and it is absolutely brilliant. It allows you to run a business without housing any of the products yourself. Once you join Amazon FBA, you will be responsible for buying products from companies and manufacturers and then directing them to one of Amazon's many warehouses, where Amazon will store your merchandise for you.

You would then create your own sellers profile on the Amazon and add a listing of the products that you purchased to the site. Buyers would then locate your product on the Amazon website and purchase from there, so you won't need to send the orders off yourself as amazing does that part of the process for you.

To describe Amazon FBA in one sentence it would be, 'Easy to learn, difficult to master.' There is a learning curve to getting started but not a difficult one. Standing out from the rest of the field, however, is the tricky bit, as the consumer will always have the choice of who to buy from.

That said, the potential is brilliant. If you start slow, learn the ropes, and then build yourself up with the right products you can create a consistent income with little effort in the long run. Do the research beforehand though, it's worth it!

2. Amazon Kindle

Ever wanted to write your own book and become an author but never knew how to get started or how to affiliate yourself with agents and publishers? Now you can write your book and skip out all the hard to do stuff with the Amazon KDP program. With Amazon KDP, all you have to do is write your book in your own time and then upload your transcript to KDP. Then fill in a view technical details (Amazon loves legal stuff) and you should be good to go to upload and sell your book on Amazon.

Writing a book will always take time and effort but this is something that many people have always wanted to do and Amazon makes being an author easier than ever before as long as what you write falls within their terms and conditions.

3. Online Courses

If you have skills that you feel have value, then you may want to consider online teaching as a way of using your knowledge to generate some income. Education is an evergreen commodity that will always hold value, this means that if you can create quality educational content then you will always have a valuable potential source of income. The amount of money that you can make will depend on the number of courses you create (more is better), the quality of the courses, the popularity of the course topic, and the platform the course is distributed from. That last one is important as it influences how you market your course. So below are a few examples of online platforms and their methods of distribution.

Teachable

Teachable, along with Coursera, is a platform that offers a lot of innovative features for online educators such as the ability to produce drip content, course bundles, etc. It is the platform that requires you to put in the most work in terms of marketing your course but also offers you the chance to charge what you think your course is truly worth an create your own online identity. This means you can charge $300 for your course, and depending on what plan you choose when joining Teachable, nearly all of it goes straight to you. It's the platform that requires the most work but the largest payoff.

Udemy

Udemy is the number one marketplace on the internet for online courses and one of the top 100 visited websites over the last few years. It is the perfect starting point as it offers a tremendously dense audience. You don't have to do much marketing here to sell your course as Udemy does the groundwork for you but if you really want to stand out then you would still need to do your marketing. The thing to keep in mind is that Udemy as a marketplace has a race to the bottom mentality where currently the audience is aware of Udemy and its basement price of $10 on certain deals. Most customers don't buy courses above this price because they know at some point they will get the course for $10. That said, the size of the audience still warrants Udemy as a great starting point for course creators.

Skillshare

With Skillshare, educators have the opportunity to create and upload content in a similar manner to Udemy. The key difference here is that Skillshare does not review your course when you submit it. The second difference is the payment method. Both Udemy and Skillshare pay instructors on a per month basis, but skillshare is a subscription service where users pay around $12 a month for access to all courses on the platform, not just yours.

Payment with Skillshare currently works on an earn by minute basis where every minute of your content watched earns you money. It sounds great in theory but in practice, you earn only $0.05 per minute. Because of the way Skillshare is structured it does not have the same modern look as Udemy does and struggles, by comparison, to keep users visiting the site. You are dependent on students viewing your content as much as possible to maximize earnings.

Therefore Skillshare should be considered as a subsidiary source of income as it can be difficult to earn a considerable amount of money without a comprehensive amount of content.

4. Freelance Work

There are some websites out there where you can advertise your skills to the world. A couple of examples include Fiverr and Upwork. Here you can create a profile and begin advertising your skills to take on freelance jobs and grow both your reputation and your portfolio.

At first, you are unlikely to get any offers for work even if you set up a really solid profile, as many clients are looking for evidence that you can get the job done.

Therefore the best thing to do is to put yourself out there and offer your services to those who may be looking for it. Even if that means accepting some low income offers to start with to build up your portfolio and your reputation.

5. Blogs

This is one of the original means of being able to make money online. Writing blogs is an easy way beginning a passive income. While the total amount of money you can make varies greatly on the niche subject that you choose to talk about, it's also a handy way of also advertising other forms of content that you have to sell. Creating the content is key, all you have to do is write about what you love. The trick, as with everything else about online content, is getting your content out there onto other peoples' computer screens. Writing blogs is actually more beneficial as a source of obtaining an audience that supports your content, and is best used in a supporting role to other forms of generating passive income.
