There's an age-old argument that entrepreneurs are born, not made.

I call bullshit.

An entrepreneur can absolutely be made. What you need to do is understand the different characteristics of what it takes to be an entrepreneur. These characteristics can be nurtured and worked on to grow into a successful entrepreneur.

But if you're a doubter or simply curious, never fear.

I've outlined the twelve characteristics you need to be a successful entrepreneur.

You gotta be goal-driven and hungry

The competition's everywhere.

Whether it's getting into nursing school or winning that promotion at work, we're always competing for something. And if you're not, then entrepreneurship is probably not for you.

Competition is a natural part of business and requires a goal-orientated mindset to power through and overcome them. Without goals in business and life, for that matter, you will likely miss out on essential opportunities for engaging, winning, and kicking ass.

You gotta be energetic and focused

Being your own boss takes work.

Albeit a different type of work, but work nonetheless.

This means you need to have a lot of energy and focus on getting it done -- especially when you don't feel like you. Having focus ensures you stay organized and on track to meet your goals and deadlines.

Having energy means you'll be able to power through in the moments you need an extra push.

You gotta be self-motivated and confident

Aren't these two things you need for most successes in life?

I mean, seriously.

Entrepreneurship and being your own boss don't mean you will always feel like working. However, you need to push through and work even while uncomfortable to be successful. You can't expect results if you constantly push off getting stuff done.

Self-confidence can make it easier to motivate yourself, too, as you know you are the best one for the job and how badly you want to get it done.

You gotta have passion and determination

Contrary to modern myths, passion alone isn't enough.

Being determined isn't enough for success either.

But the combo of the two will create within you an unbeatable drive.

Passion and determination make it easy to fight through the feelings of demotivation. You know, those ties where you want to slow down or quit. It also helps you get back on track when you experience a setback, a natural part of the business.

You gotta be a creative and strategic problem solver

You've heard the saying about "thinking out of the box," right?

Well, the best of the best entrepreneurs know that there is no box.

Yeah. No box.

That's creativity at its finest.

Creativity and having proper problem-solving skills are required to provide value to your company and customers. The most successful entrepreneurs understand that if they don't provide value or solve a problem in some way for their tribe, then they don't have much to offer in the first place.

You gotta be independent and optimistic

Glass half full or glass half empty.

Just remember that the optimistic ones always, and I mean always, see it as half full. Combine that with independence, and you'll find that you're the one who will fill that glass up when it's empty. You won't wait for someone to do it for you.

The final word

So, suppose you want to be a successful entrepreneur. In that case, it's essential that you have most, if not all, of these twelve characteristics.

While some may come easier to you than others, don't give up. These traits can be nurtured and worked on over time with the right mindset and practice.

Keep pushing forward and always remember why you're doing this in the first place.

To be your own boss and have the lifestyle you want and deserve.
