Dubai on a budget
How to experience the City of Gold while saving

Dubai is often misjudged as a place which serves only luxury travellers. However, this futuristic city, with its world-class amenities and modern technological devices, embodies a softer and more economical side. These experiences are rich in atmosphere, culture and landscapes. So read on to prepare yourself to explore Dubai on a budget.
Visit during the low season
The low season in Dubai is from June to September. This is because extreme temperatures prevail then, which often go beyond 40°C. If you are looking for a stay without breaking the bank, this is an ideal time to head there as flight rates, accommodation prices and packages for excursions are reasonably low compared to the peak season.
Choose to stay in an affordable region like Jebel Ali, which is cheaper than central Dubai. Many Jebel Ali hotels offer low rates for visitors during this season. Hotels belonging to JA Resorts & Hotels, in particular, like The Manor by JA, have deals like up to 20 per cent savings if the bookings are done early, with other perks that you will be able to access if you sign up for their JA Discovery loyalty programme.
Take affordable transport options
The most budget-friendly way to navigate Dubai is by using public transport. This mainly centres on the metro and buses. You need a NoI card to use these options. If you have set yourself in an area like Jebel Ali, then you need to use the Dubai Metro (Red Line) to navigate to places. This travels as far as central Dubai and the Marina. A fast, efficient and comfortable way to travel, the carriages are also air-conditioned.
The buses in this area are operated by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority. They operate generally every half an hour and are connected to key spots within Jafza North and South. Use the RTA Journey Planner to plan your routes and know the times that the buses operate.
Go for cheap or free activities
Vacations mean relaxation. Therefore, one of the easiest ways to experience this is to spend a day at the beach in a spot like Jebel Ali Public Beach. This is also an activity which will not cost you a cent as you can play on the sand, swim in the safe waters and relax, soaking up the sun during the early morning hours or late afternoon, armed with a book. You can also explore less costly watersports such as kite surfing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.
If you are interested in cultural immersion and spiritual encounters, you can head off to places like Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Temple or Hindu Temple Dubai, which is located in Jebel Ali Village. Other free or pocket-friendly excursions that you would not want to miss include visits to Jebel Ali Racecourse to witness horse training sessions, and cycling or strolling along community parks.
Eat well for less
One of the biggest surprises in Dubai is its access to affordable meals. Though there is a range of opulent restaurants and trendy dine-ins, the place also boasts a thriving street food scene. Indian food is generally affordable and can be sought out in small restaurants for quick bites and vegetarian options. You also get mini markets which offer simple yet delicious breakfasts and lunch for low prices.
One of the most popular, budget-friendly food items you can have, which is also filling, is Shawarma. This is a dish that has marinated chicken, lamb or beef that has been slow-roasted. Pickled vegetables and sauces are wrapped in a flatbread at the final stage of preparing this delicacy. Some of the other things you can eat for a few bucks include South Indian dosai, naan and curry, biriyani and samosas.
