Hello everyone!
Welcome to my blog, Doctor by Day, Coder by Night. I’m thrilled to embark on this journey and share my experiences with you on Vocal Media. This blog is a window into my unique world, where I balance the demanding life of a medical student with the ever-evolving field of software engineering. Through this blog, I hope to connect with like-minded individuals and offer insights into the dual life of a medical student and coder.
A Little About Me
I am a fifth-year medical student at the University of Ghana, currently immersed in my pediatric rotation. With just one year left to complete my medical education, the journey has been both challenging and rewarding. Next week, I face my end-of-rotation exam, a crucial step in my academic progress.
My Dual Life
Beyond the hospital wards and lecture halls, I dive into the realm of technology. I hold two remote jobs that allow me to merge my passion for medicine with my love for coding.
1. Blockchain Development: I work on a social media app that operates on a blockchain. This job, while not very time-consuming, comes with its challenges, particularly due to the rigidity of the project owners. Blockchain technology fascinates me because of its potential to revolutionize various industries, including healthcare. It’s exciting to be part of a project that could have a significant impact.
2. Assistant Role: My second job involves assisting a professional with his work on restaurant receipts. This role allows me to hone my coding skills and learn about different aspects of software development.
Personal Interests
When I’m not studying or coding, I enjoy reading, playing chess, and exploring new technologies. Reading helps me unwind and offers new perspectives, while chess sharpens my strategic thinking skills. Exploring new technologies keeps me updated with the latest advancements and fuels my passion for continuous learning.
Challenges and Rewards
Balancing two demanding careers is not easy. The biggest challenge is managing my time effectively to meet academic and work commitments without burning out. There are days when the workload from both fronts can be overwhelming. I have to be strategic about prioritizing tasks and sometimes make tough decisions about what to focus on.
For instance, there are times when I have an important coding project deadline and a major medical exam within the same week. In such situations, I break down tasks into smaller, manageable parts and tackle them one at a time. This helps me maintain focus and avoid feeling overwhelmed. Despite the challenges, the reward of being able to impact lives through medicine and solve complex problems through coding keeps me motivated.
What to Expect
In this blog, I’ll be detailing my daily life, sharing insights from my medical rotations, coding projects, and the juggling act that comes with wearing two very different hats. Whether it's preparing for exams, tackling coding challenges, or managing work-life balance, you’ll get an unfiltered look at my experiences.
Stay tuned for updates on my pediatric rotation, insights into blockchain technology, and tips on balancing dual careers. I hope my journey inspires and informs fellow medical students, aspiring coders, and anyone interested in the intersection of healthcare and technology.
