...That Is Not Teaching

The struggle is real when you are about to graduate and embark on a journey after an English degree. However, many of us English majors are asked, "Oh so you wanna be a teacher, eh?" I cannot stress how many times that has come up in a conversation. So don't worry here is a list of things you can do.

1. Obvious, but umm...be a writer.

We are trained to read and to write. We have all read the books that bore you to deaf such as Charles Dickens. If you want to be a writer, you should pursue it, it might take time, but it will make you happy.

2. Editing

This is a very popular career for English majors because we all see so many mistakes that drive us up the wall. Yes, my grammar is horrendous (I am well aware). Even try editing a peer's paper and see if you enjoy doing that. There are also several sites where students can submit their paper and get some feedback.

3. Public Relations

Every company needs that go-to person. You can do that. However, you probably need to stick your nose out of your book and get out there and be social, which many struggle with. But if you like people, this is for you! Public relations are the ones that affect the image of a company, which people see on the streets.

4. Sales

Sales is a very tough job and there will always be pressure, but if you are one of those types of people that work great under pressure then this is for you. Also, you get paid with whatever you sell as well so there is that extra perk.

5. Administration

A lot of people in every company need administrators and even though they need someone with some computer skill and administrative background, it is an easy job to get into with no experience. Some administrative positions require nothing but a high school diploma and if you have an English degree that can give you the edge.

6. Social Media

This is a huge hit when it comes to jobs nearly every company in the world uses networking to find out information and get jobs. Social media is a huge part of that and it is constantly moving forward. We have Twitter and Facebook and they need someone to post all the information. That could be you!

7. Publishing

More and more people are pushing to self-publish, but publishers are still needed and they get paid pretty decently.

8. Event Planning

Event planners are always needed because the job requires a lot of attention to detail and clients can be pushy. However, this job can be well-paid if you are very good at the job. If you are organized and like to bark at people, this job is for you.

9. Freelance Writer

Write what you feel, what you want, and get paid. A good start for anyone who wants to be an author.

10. Marketing

Marketing is a job that will always exist. Entering the field can be competitive, but it can be rewarding in the long run. There are many sections of marketing too, you can be the creative or the uptight person and you can be both.

Hopefully, this gave some insight to those struggling to find what they want after they graduate from a BA in English.
