Burnout Felt Like Death.

It Led to the Birth of My Coaching Business Because I Learned THIS

Vanessa Norman, NDIS Business Coach

I built a multi-million-dollar business from the ground up. No investors. No shortcuts. Just pure grit, 16-hour days, and a determination to create something meaningful in the NDIS space. In just five years, I built a $4 million company with over 50 staff and 200 clients.

On the outside, it looked like success. On the inside, I was silently drowning. I was raising four kids — three of them neurodivergent — while managing a team, carrying the emotional weight of a growing company, and pushing through the kind of burnout that makes your body shut down.

I wore a heart monitor, cried in carparks, and kept going until I couldn’t anymore. So, I did something no one saw coming.

I gave it all away.

Today, I am in my happy place, coaching others

The business, the team, the systems, everything. No sale. No payout. Just freedom. People said I was crazy, but walking away saved my life. And in that space, I turned my travesty into my biggest success. If burnout hadn’t hit me THAT hard, I would never have found my true purpose. Today, I use the hardest days in my life as a powerful tool to help others by becoming an NDIS business coach, and I couldn’t be happier.

I Made My Biggest Battle My Greatest Triumph By Truly Immersing Myself in Four Unshakable Truths

1. Your Nervous System Runs Your Business, Whether You Know It or Not

Polyvagal Theory explains that the nervous system operates in three key states: safe and social (regulated), fight or flight (overdrive), and freeze or shutdown (numb or stuck). Many leaders unknowingly run their business from a fight or flight state, constantly reacting, overbooking, micromanaging, or making panic driven decisions. Others slip into freeze, feeling overwhelmed, avoiding action, or procrastinating, all of which are nervous system responses, not character flaws. Longevity begins with learning how to recognise and regulate these states in yourself to lead clearly.

2. Rest Isn’t Lazy, It’s a Crucial Leadership Skill

Rest and nervous system regulation are essential for effective decision-making and creativity. Bingeing my favourite series or passively scrolling on my phone are not constructive forms of rest. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them, but I do not count them as ‘active rest.’ Active rest means regulating my nervous system. When I feel dysregulated, I don’t push through anymore. I pause. I notice where the tension sits in my body; maybe a tight chest or a knot in my stomach, and I let myself feel it. I breathe until the emotion passes. The mental clarity that comes with this practice is incredible; my brain and my emotions feel rested. As a coach, I believe real business growth starts with regulating your body, not just your schedule.

3. Flexibility Creates Resilience, Not Just in Plans, but in Energy

I’ve learned that rigid plans often clash with the natural rhythms of our nervous system. When we don’t allow space to adapt, we burn out. Being in business is like running a marathon, it’s not a sprint and flexibility isn’t a weakness. It’s a power move. If I’d continued on the path I was on, I would have destroyed my body. I was constantly sick, if my GP had a loyalty card, I’d have maxed mine out before any other patients in his practice. The final straw came when I had to wear a heart monitor, thinking I had a major cardiac illness only to discover that anxiety was destroying my health. I was giving my business 110% but for how long could I actually sustain that? By scaling back and giving LESS, I have the capacity to now give more over a longer period.

4. Regulated Leaders Create Regulated Teams

I learned that the energy I brought into the room set the emotional climate across the business. Burnout? Even if I was the only one physically burning out, that lack of capacity within me affected everyone, even if they weren’t conscious of it. I wasn’t short tempered or unpleasant, in fact, we had a great team with fantastic morale, but on some level I know that my team was carrying stress they didn’t need to carry. My ability to compartmentalise was almost superhuman (if I do say so myself), but I will never put myself in a position where I am that stretched again. Instead, I will manage my stress levels.

A regulated leader creates a safe, steady team. That’s why I believe business coaching must include nervous system support. Strategy means nothing if the leader behind it is dysregulated. Regulate yourself, and your team will follow.

Burnout Forced Me to Rebuild

Burnout stripped away what wasn’t working: unsustainable hours, ignoring emotional needs, chasing growth for growth’s sake. The rebuild focused on honouring the body’s signals, pacing growth, and investing in emotional intelligence. Business coaching must evolve to include nervous system wisdom for true longevity.
