Building a Business at a Young Age
The One Shot Media Story
Have you ever wanted to work for yourself while doing something you love? I know I did. When I was 15 years old I was working in the construction industry as a general laborer, and I did not like it at all. My passion has always been towards content creation, so I tried becoming a YouTuber at a young age, and that did not work out. One day I thought to myself, "how can I make money off of something I enjoy doing?"
Well, long story short I started an advertising and media production company in my hometown of Springdale, Arkansas. Little did I know that this company would change my life, work ethic, and salary forever. Hopefully... I started this company with almost no knowledge of what digital media production actually was, and boy was I in for a surprise. During the first few month, I would help out local friends and family filming and taking pictures for them. The first real client I got on my own was a custom truck company. I went into a meeting with them, and they loved some of the work that I have done. Things kept progressing, and we started getting clients who needed more than videography and photography. That is when I hired a long time friend to help us design websites and apps for small business to streamline their work processes. I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT WEBSITES OR CODING, but with a LOT of hard work, I was able to teach myself how to code and build websites.
I now have two employees one who does graphic design, and the other who codes, while I stick to mostly video and photography work. One thing that I feel like is the most important part about starting up your business is that you have to grind. By grind, I mean work every day with your goal in mind, and do not let failures or lost clients distract you from your goal. I can say that I have lost out on a fair amount of clients, but I used that as motivation to get better at the things that I do. Throughout this experience, I have had the chance to work with people from universities all the way to politicians. If you have that same dream of owning your own business one day I encourage you to take that risk and work until you achieve your goal.
